So why do thousands of career women nationwide opt to put their careers and salary-earning potential on the back burner to stay home to care for their children?
A Labor of Love
"I had zero experience taking care of children before I had my own," said Laura Mercer, mother of two boys and professional stay-at-home mom outside of Las Vegas, Nev. "Being a career woman most of my adult life, the thought of being a stay-at-home mom didn't even occur to me."

The libs would love it - they want to "raise" those kids, early and often.
Don't forget the fact that our kids continue to perform poorer and poorer in school in comparison to other countries. The countries that are beating us (including some/most european countries), are the ones with the moms at home being a positive influence on the children and helping them get their work done.
Wait...I thought our culture had been preaching, for years, that women who stay at home are forced into slavery...that they'd really prefer to be out in the workforce, taking their children to Day Care....
if a woman has to ask the question, she'll never know the answer.
Gee, maybe it's very "21st Century" of me, but I don't have a problem with women working at any point, so long as they (and the fathers) provide for the general welfare for the children.
Can't lay it all at the feet of working women - many of them have husbands that demand they get out there and bring home bacon. There are plenty of greedy and/or lazy guys out there. I just wish that more women who married those types of guys would have their tubes tied or something, so as not to bring kids into that situation.
Believe it or not, the gov't DOES support stay-at-home moms. There's Title XIX, the Child Tax Credit, Earned Income Credit, WIC, food stamps, etc.
Granted, they don't have to stay at home to collect. But, it often helps them qualify where they otherwise might not.
I don't think it has to be the mom that stays home. I think Dads can also do the job if the mom has a better job. My brother did this, and it worked out great for his family. He died last year at 49. He got to see his daughter graduate from college, and his son go off to college. We were all grateful for the time he had to spend with them.
Also, his wife has an excellent job, and they are not in financial troubles.
According to Bill Coleman and salary.com, a stay-at-home mom is worth $131,471/year.
Maybe families with a mom staying home and keeping her children OUT of daycare, after-school programs, etc. should get a major tax credit.
I know a few of those guys around. The women want to stay home, but the guys pressure the women. It seems making money is more important then their kids' well-being.
Excellent post. I am in total agreement. Women need to stay home and raise the children they have. Most social problems can be traced directly to the break-down of the family. Putting mothers back in the home is a good place to start.
You forgot /sarcasm on :)
How about all those feminazi sponsored studies which said daycare was CRUCIAL to the "socialization" of children? If a "womyn" was not doing motherhood by proxie she was an eeeeeevil right wing mother and a slave to the paternalistic male oriented oligarchy.
I think the problem with the elites is that to support motherhood you have to support fatherhood. They prefer the state sanction asexual amoral "parental"hood.
Based on what I see from many couples I know, there are a good many families that could have one parent stay home but believe they financially can't because they are used to a high standard of living and won't make any cuts. Too many families are in debt from buying bigger houses, new cars, and more stuff, and to sustain that both adults must work. I also know many families who have moved to a smaller house or driven the same vehicle for 10 years so they could afford one less income and they've been fine. But our society uses the houses, cars, etc. as gauges of success, and too many people aren't willing to cut back on those things.
I wish I'd had the opportunity to do so... but couldn't afford that option. I did work nightshifts at a nearby facility... so I'd be home to get them off to school in the morning, be there when they got home in the afternoon and be able to put them to bed before I went to work. I was exhausted most of the time (hard to sleep during the day).....but at least I got to be more involved in their lives than most working Moms.
They'll tell you that "they have to work" to pay the bills - but they'll seldom recognize that their predicament is as a result of their own free choice.
