I wonder what would happen if the government started adding up the costs involved in keeping moms IN the workplace as opposed to supporting stay-at-home moms?Believe it or not, the gov't DOES support stay-at-home moms. There's Title XIX, the Child Tax Credit, Earned Income Credit, WIC, food stamps, etc.
Granted, they don't have to stay at home to collect. But, it often helps them qualify where they otherwise might not.

We support the children of single parents to the tune of 100,000,000,000 dollars per year via our prison systems.
