I don't know how GOP the area is. I know the Cinci burbs are extremely republican, but Cinci itself has a large black population. I'd assume that it leans GOP, but not sure how much it does. In special elections, there are no gimmee's and anything can happen since turnout is small.
Good luck to Tom Brinkman, and I hope DeWine isn't as lefty as his dad.

This is an incredibly safe Republican district. Maybe the most GOP district in a state with 12 of them.
Of course a D could slide in in a plurality and then get crushed in November 2006. Not that I want that to happen.
If I could vote there, I'd support Brinkman.
I'm hearing that DeWine has the nomination sewn up.
This seat will remain Republican.
The top four candidates (in no particular order) are DeWine, Brinkman, McEwen, and Schmidt. To be honest, I see no strong excitement for any candidate. DeWine is certainly the favorite in this case, but there are many questions out there about him. Brinkman is a strong conservative and can be very outspoken sometimes, which can be to his detriment. McEwen has the issue of living in Virginia and I believe he had problems in his previous stint in Columbus. Schmidt could not win a state Senate primary last year, where she was endorsed and supported by an officeholder and operatives currently under federal investigation.
I could potentially see a dark horse candidate winning this. There could be a surprise entry to take it (WLW-AM's Bill Cunningham has been mentioned). Either way, this thing will be nasty.
Ugh. I hate aristocracies. And I don't particularly care for the old man.
Oh well, maybe he's more solid than the old man.
If the Ohio Republican Party has the same rules as the Republican Party of Kentucky, the chairs and vice-chairs of all counties in the district (also the district officers) will gather and vote on whom the nominee is. I would hazard to guess that the elder DeWine would have a strong sway with those folks being the senior Senator and formerly serving as Congressman and Lt. Governor.
Tom Raga would be an excellent candidate.
Um, hate to break it to you, but he's already in the race. You might want to check out his website: http://patdewine.com/ Also, I'm pretty sure he lives in the district.
When it is all said and done, I hope Tom Brinkman can pull this out. Hopefully, voters will be sick of DeWine jumping from job to job.
"Oh well, maybe he's more solid than the old man."
Don't count on it! I live in this district, and DeWine the younger has pi$$ed a lot of people off. First, he left his wife and young children for a dalliance with another woman, and has since divorced. (This, after acting holier than thou, family values, conservative, etc.) Second, he was just elected last year to a Hamilton County Commissioner's seat after a really ugly campaign. A lot of people think he is using his father's name to move up the political ladder. I have never been impressed by him. I don't think he is a shoo-in. Depends on who else (and how many) run against him. I'm really going to miss Portman -- sigh.
"Rinovich"
LOL!! I love it!! May I use it?
I hope Pat DeWine is not as quirky as his dad, Sen. Mike DeWine. He can be for some pretty strange things sometimes.
From the impresssion I've seen on candidate sites, the governor calls a special primary and general election and sets it on the dates of his choosing.
Oh wow! That does make it interesting, and I guess makes more sense why the candidates would have websites going.
In Kentucky, the governor calls a special election, but the parties just select their nominees (same for all state legislative elections as well). Our way is inherently more political.
I can understand people being upset with DeWine for some of his stances, but I don't think he should be hit for trying to move up the political ladder. I don't see anything wrong with trying to achieve higher office if possible.
The timing is what people are complaining about, especially after the rough primary for county commissioner.
