Harpers Magazines May cover stories about The Christian Rights War On America, frightened me, although not the way Harpers meant them to. I fear these stories could mark the beginning of a systematic campaign of hatred directed at traditional Christians. Whether this is what Harpers intends, I cannot say. But regardless of the intention, the effect seems clear.
The phrase campaign of hatred is a strong one, and I worry about amplifying an already dangerous dynamic of recrimination on both sides of the culture wars. I dont doubt that conservatives, Christian and otherwise, are sometimes guilty of rhetorical excess. Yet despite what weve been told, the most extreme political rhetoric of our day is being directed against traditional Christians by the left.
Its been said that James Dobson overstepped legitimate bounds when he compared activist judges to the Ku Klux Klan. Yes, that was an ill-considered remark. I hope and expect it will not be repeated. But Dobson made that comparison extemporaneously and in passing. If that misstep was such a problem, what are we to make of a cover story in Harpers that systematically identifies conservative Christianity with fascism? According to Harpers, conservative Christians are making war on America. Can you imagine the reaction to a cover story about a war on America by blacks, gays, Hispanics, or Jews? Then theres Frank Richs April 24 New York Times op-ed comparing conservative Christians to George Wallace, segregationists, and lynch mobs.

This is some pretty sick stuff... Just goes to show the heartbeat behind the modern left is anti-religion.
These people are off the rocker.
Thanks for the link! The information is GREATLY appreciated!
McCarthyism by the Left.
Because the Left has no new policy ideas (Roe v Wade from 3 decades ago being their last), they can only offer to "fight" and hate while simultaneously criticizing everyone else for anything short of Holy Perfection.
In short, modern socialism has become America's reactionary, pessimistic naysayer.
Harper's must have missed the memo saying that the new strategy was to gain democrat votes by playing up to the Christians.
Not suprising. Since the day after the election this has been the Left's strategy. The Left figures that most Americans fear "Jesus Freaks." Hence, the MSM/Left took the "values voter" exit polling data and instantly equated it with "evangelicals" which in turn was equated with "Jesus Freaks." All during the Schiavo saga what was the MSM's spin? Simple, "see, we told you those Republicans (read Jesus Freaks) want to control and interfere with private decisions. Aren't you stupid voters sorry you voted for those evil Jesus Freak, Nazi, Republicans?"
Goodness gracious..."the beginning" of a campaign? No, the systematic campaign has been going on for quite some time, the hatred and propaganda against Christians was just more subtle in the past.
Anyone who would have Harper's Magazine in their home deserves to be sprayed down with DDT.
McCarthyism re-emerged in the late 80s and it was labeled the PC movement. Joe McCarthy actually had the best of intentions and was vilified for attacking the left.
Bubba and Hillary started the hate-the-Christians movement and the rest of the left and the OLD Media have picked up the ball and are running the show in their absence. I can't count the times Hillary Rotten spoke about the Vast Right-Wing Christian conspiracy.
I'm fully aware of the facts and history of Joe McCarthy. It's a tactic of the Left to use language to manipulate public perception. Merely calling the Left, "PC", is too gentle. Abusing the charge of "McCarthyism" against the left would be delicious and deserved irony, as in: "Senator Barbara Boxer was doing "the McCarthy" in the Bolton hearings". I think "Joe" would approve.
It's bad. And as for Dobson and the KKK comment, I think he meant the comparison far more narrowly than it has been interpreted. He used the KKK precisely to illustrate the extreme result when men try to enforce their own kind of justice. Nevertheless, it gave opportunity for the other side to criticize him and so it was a poor choice of words.
Does anyone here even know someone who subscribes to Dominionist or "Christian Reconstructionist" theories?
I don't. And I was raised in a Fundamentalist, Baptist environment.
This is most important article of the day. Supposed mainstream liberals, like those at Harper's and the NY Slimes, are ginning up hatred found on DU (like "dominionists") enough to create a new "Krystalnacht of the Left".
They have at least one newer idea, gay marraige.
Amazing how the Left has devolved into something solely concerned with things south of the belt line.
