Laura leaves 'em laughing, gasping (Not a very family-values-type speech..very risque: David Korn)

Who knew? First lady Laura Bush took over the podium from her husband at Saturday night's annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner and knocked 'em dead, keeping Washington's most powerful politicos in stitches as she worked the ballroom like a seasoned stand-up comic.

CUT

Although Washington's movers and shakers laughed at Mrs. Bush's performance, some in the press woke up with a Sunday morning hangover and began to criticize her monologue as immodest at best and downright bawdy at worst.

"Laura Bush cracks risque jokes at the White House Correspondents' dinner," sniffed Agence France-Presse. CNN reporter Elaine Quijano, who attended the dinner, also apparently had her sensibilities scarred by some of the first lady's quips.

"In some respects, I think for some folks it was a little shocking because she kind of crossed the line a little bit in some people's minds," she said.

"It was very risque," the Nation's David Korn said yesterday on Fox News. "I was wondering what the social conservatives and James Dobson had to say about all these jokes that were laced with sexual innuendo. Not a very family-values-type speech. I'm not sure I want to explain a lot of those jokes to my 4-year-old."

Eyebrows were raised by the first lady's bit about the president's ranching skills, which Mrs. Bush said her husband lacked because the elite schools he attended, Andover and Yale, "don't have a real strong ranching program."

She then added: "He's learned a lot about ranching since that first year when he tried to milk the horse. What's worse, it was a male horse."

The crowd howled. The joke, a female Associated Press reporter said, "had women giggling in the bathroom."

Yeah right, like his 4-year old was even watching...

Good advice. The Nation is as anti-american as you can get. Worthless commies. And that Katrina chick gives me the willies!

Nothing she said (in the article, anyway) sounds like anything an adult audience couldn't handle. And, if a joke shouldn't be explained to a 4-year-old, then here's my advice: don't.

I think they're disappointed that she's human, and they're angry that she made them laugh. When you laugh, you forget just about everything else. They don't want to forget to hate the Bushes.

I expect that out of Al Franken. I do NOT expect this out of Mrs. Bush. Most of it was hilariously funny. But I think the part about visiting the Chippendales was uncalled for. And she brought into it the names of other ladies in this administration who may not appreciate the association.

BTW, I don't know what's going on over at the Times, but I will note that David Corn spells his name with a 'c,' not a 'k.'

It was a serious mistake. She surrendered her heretofore wholesome image before the entire world.

The jokes do not offend me.....that they came from Laura Bush does. This fiasco is NO WAY the equivalent of Barbara Bush's occasional humorous denigration of her own husband.

She made a terrible mistake.

Then don't, David, unless your 4 year old kid rules your roost. What a pathetic attempt at criticizing Laura Bush. Korn is such a dork.

>>These jokes are "risque"? They must have left out the best ones.<<

I agree.
I read the whole article. I can't find anything there.

I guess people think that GW and Laura had sex only once.
Geez oh man, even my very Catholic mother who never used a curse word in her life could tell the rancher joke.

Mountain out of Molehill.

"too bad they didn't have the same moral indignation when ole Bill had his zipper down"...... Wonder what Mrs. High and Mighty Hillary said when she attended the dinner. I was surprised at some of sexual comments by the first lady, wonder who wrote them.

There was absolutely NOTHING morally 'slimy' in what Laura said.

They were jokes and they were funny.

In the end she gave an emotional tribute to her wonderful husband and said how much she loved him.

She delivered these mildly bawdy, but humorous in their complete absurdity, jokes with flawless comic timing.

It was not disturbing.........it was hilarious!

Did this guy, whoever he is, complain about Whoopie Goldberg's remarks? I didn't think so.

The sky is not falling and Laura Bush proved that she's funny. I'm sorry you were offended, but I'm glad you're in the minority.

We need to lighten up on Laura. She still looks and acts like a home coming queen. W is lucky to have her.
And, no one should even mention the venereal diseased Robin Williams in the same breath.

ROTFLOL. So now she's a wench? geez-lou-frickin-weez. Get over it. Or don't. Let it fester inside of you. Either way, Laura Bush is the same person she has always been, only now, more people know about her rather funny side.

I agree that parts of it were extremely funny. And she ended it very well, as you say. But I was very disturbed by the Chippendales remark. I think that women who go see them are a blight on society. I know that it was a joke, but I don't things are funny when they are symptomatic of underlying societal problems. And she also brought other women's names into her joke. If they knew about it beforehand and agreed, then that's fine. I liked the rest of it, though. She really does have a talent at humor. She delivered her lines very well. I just think she should have been more discerning, that's all.

What crossed the line? Milking a male horse? I didn't take that as dirty, I took that as stupidity...like Kramer on Seinfeld trying to get eggs from a rooster.

Katrina's husband teaches at Columbia University (I think)

He's the Russian expert. What a puke! They both hate America.
