Who knew? First lady Laura Bush took over the podium from her husband at Saturday night's annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner and knocked 'em dead, keeping Washington's most powerful politicos in stitches as she worked the ballroom like a seasoned stand-up comic.
CUT
Although Washington's movers and shakers laughed at Mrs. Bush's performance, some in the press woke up with a Sunday morning hangover and began to criticize her monologue as immodest at best and downright bawdy at worst.
"Laura Bush cracks risque jokes at the White House Correspondents' dinner," sniffed Agence France-Presse. CNN reporter Elaine Quijano, who attended the dinner, also apparently had her sensibilities scarred by some of the first lady's quips.
"In some respects, I think for some folks it was a little shocking because she kind of crossed the line a little bit in some people's minds," she said.
"It was very risque," the Nation's David Korn said yesterday on Fox News. "I was wondering what the social conservatives and James Dobson had to say about all these jokes that were laced with sexual innuendo. Not a very family-values-type speech. I'm not sure I want to explain a lot of those jokes to my 4-year-old."
Eyebrows were raised by the first lady's bit about the president's ranching skills, which Mrs. Bush said her husband lacked because the elite schools he attended, Andover and Yale, "don't have a real strong ranching program."
She then added: "He's learned a lot about ranching since that first year when he tried to milk the horse. What's worse, it was a male horse."
The crowd howled. The joke, a female Associated Press reporter said, "had women giggling in the bathroom."

The Dems don't really care about telling even the filthiest jokes -- as folks like Whoopi Goldberg demonstrate every day.
What they care about is "divide and conquer". This is a carefully calculated scheme to enrage the Christian Coalition prudes and get them to attack Bush.
Hyperventilating about this very mildly naughty standup routine is playing RIGHT into the hands of the schemers. Don't be played for a fool.
FWIW, if a Dem told an old groaner like the "milk a bull" line, I wouldn't care two flips. Point is, a Dem would NEVER tell a mild joke like that - - they always go for the long bomb, the F-bomb that is.
Name ONE time when Bush has waffled on abortion and provide a link to EXACT quotes, no "sources say" quotes.
But Teresa is not a lady. At least in my book. And Southern Baptist mothers and grandmothers (my mother and grandmother was a SB too) telling jokes at a private gathering is fine. I don't have a problem with that. This is because Mrs. Bush the First LADY of the US speaking before a publicized event. That's what makes this inappropriate.
Joyously, you are also a minority in life.
Unfortunately, Red Skelton's shows did not make the rerun circuit on cable like I Love Lucy and some of her other stuff. I may check EBay or Amazon to see what's out there. I do recall reading that Skelton was upset at the "adult" turn entertainment was taking in the late 1960s and thereafter. He did continue his painting career and his charitable work after leaving comedy.
Ummmm..............she said she watches DH and went to C. If that ain't endorsement, tell me what is.
At any rate, it certainly falls short of condemnation, which is the only way my First Lady would ever be caught mentioning them.
YES. Of course it is! Not sure what your point was.
The humor in this was that George and Laura have an incredible marriage (they go to bed at 9;00 TOGETHER), and the 'desperate' thing was ludicrous.
I will repeat, there was nothing immoral in what Laura said, and overreacting to this mild humor is playing into the hands of the left..........some of which are probably lurking and filled with 'glee' at some of the comments here.......
You want to see funny? Just look at the way the President has screwed up the SS reform issue. It's a knee slapper.
Study up on comedy, and get back to me.....
THEY WERE JOKES!
Further proof that Democraps have no sense of humor whatsoever:-(
And why should you have to - you had your 4-year-old at the White House Correspondent's dinner or maybe he/she will insist on seeing the film of the dinner in lieu of Dora the Explorer? Liberals always whine that conservatives are 'too rigid, up-tight, religious Bible-thumpers, etc.' The First Lady lets her hair down a little in a very 'non family-values' setting (it's the PRESS for goodness sakes - since when did they turn into prudes?) and there are complaints? Your hypocrisy is hanging out a mile because the film clips I saw showed the audience laughing hysterically at her jokes. Conservatives, especially the President and family ..... d**ned if they do, d**ned if they don't ...... so I think they should. Laura Bush is a national treasure.
I heard all I needed to hear after the Monday Night Football publicity stunt last fall. I got the impression said housewives are desperate for sex (big surprise there).
Details, please........
I am disappointed in her. I considered here more of a lady than that. BTW, I do not indulge in that type of humor either, so that is not a sexist comment.
If others want to do so, that is your choice. I have a right to disagree with using bawdy humor just as you may disagree with me.
