Devaluing lives (like Terri Schiavo's)

Devaluing lives

By Nat Hentoff

While the media focused on religious groups and pro-lifers (not all pro-lifers are religious) engaged in trying to save Terri Schiavo, largely ignored were many disability-rights organizations. Andrew J. Imparato, head of the largest of them, the American Association of People with Disabilities, emphasizes there are more than 56 million American children and adults with disabilities, and I would note that many of the rest of us may unexpectedly join their number.

This past March, Mr. Imparato, speaking to CNN regarding Mrs. Schiavo's plight, said that he feared that "when we start devaluing the lives of peoples with disabilities, we don't know where that's going to stop." Tellingly, he added: "You also need to take into account the financial implications of all of this. We have an economy that is not doing as well as it once was and a lot of people are looking at how can we save money. One way to save money is make it easier for people with disabilities to die." Since the final removal of Terri Schiavo's feeding tube, disability-rights organizations have become increasingly involved with getting Congress to pass federal legislation that can begin protecting the voiceless, as Terri was against guardians who have conflicts of interest. Their claims to know the wishes of persons who can't speak for themselves are often disputed by other members of the disabled's family.

Two years ago, during my coverage of the Terri Schiavo case, I quoted her father, Bob Schindler, who turned out to be prophetic as to his daughter's ultimate fate: "We pay great lip service in this country to disability rights, but as the degree of a person's disability increases, the level of protection that person receives decreases."

I'm not sure of the amount of government expenditures law abiding disabled are entitled to in an effort to emulate ordinariness, but they will always have the right to their lives--to be born and not be forced to die.

Let us not allow Terri's death to mean nothing. If her example leads to increased protections for the disabled, then we will have achieved something good through her tragedy.

The advancing Culture Of Death. Its easier to kill someone who's not young, healthy, or beautiful. They're a financial burden and when they're in a coma, they're not sentient. So a rationale has been created to kill people that don't look like society's image of a person. The disabled fall into that category. People think Terri Schiavo's case was unique but I prefer to think of it as a bellweather on society's attitudes to the least among us.

It's not society as a whole, it's the insurance industry. I've always thought the whole issue is really about money. If the family hadn't been paying out of pocket the insurance company would have put her down a long time ago.

Just watch as we creep closer and closer to universal health insurance.

This will become all the more common as baby boomers hit retirement homes, and Social Security is strained to the breaking point.

Once again proof that this isn't a partisan issue. Hentoff is very far to the left, but he gets this issue right every time.

"It's not society as a whole, it's the insurance industry."

Somebody must do an investigation of the medical insurance industry - deep cover if necessary - to find out how much money it's spending to lobby for forced, involuntary euthanasia. Soros is a big player - his job is to get people to believe they have a duty to die on a doctor's whim. But unless there were a sound, financial bottom-line advantage for someone, his efforts would have little support. The medical insurance industry has a huge incentive, so that's where big answers lie.

Room must be made for Social Security and Medicaid payments to all those illegal aliens who are here to do the jobs Americans won't. [Because Americans cant get them since they're all filled by illegals already.] We're being phased out - in the most literal sense - all for the sake of lower production costs, and lower "maintenance costs". Capitalism and Socialism are merging.

There. I said it.

Ah yes, Soros. I recall Grampa Dave mentioning this on the day Terri died:

The paradox of Nat Hentoff in the Washington Times shows this issue concerns the spectrum and defies the Left's smear of religious zealotry.

When others get to decide whose life is worth living and whose is not, it means big trouble. We're all in trouble.

And it's just like abortion. Once someone has had an abortion, they HAVE to try and justify it. Otherwise they have to admit they committed murder . . .

We already have committees appointed to decide who gets to live and who has to die. Some of the advocates of involuntary euthanasia actually point to the fact that there are such committees as evidence there should be such committees. Just like they point to the fact that judge greer ordered the death of Terri as proof that he should have ordered her death. They are such simpletons.
