WASHINGTON - First lady Laura Bush stole the show with a surprise comedy routine that ripped President Bush and brought an audience that included much of official Washington and a dash of Hollywood to a standing ovation at a dinner honoring award-winning journalists.
The president planned a speech late Saturday at the 91st annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner, but was quickly "interrupted" by his wife in an obviously planned ploy.
"Not that old joke, not again," she said to the delight of the audience. "I've been attending these dinners for years and just quietly sitting there. I've got a few things I want to say for a change."
The president sat down and she proceeded to note that he is "usually in bed by now" and said she told him recently, "If you really want to end tyranny in the world you're going to have to stay up later."
She outlined a typical evening: "Nine o'clock, Mr. Excitement here is sound asleep and I'm watching `Desperate Housewives'." Comedic pause. "With Lynne Cheney. Ladies and gentlemen, I am a desperate housewife."
But she said they obviously were destined to be together as a couple because "I was the librarian who spent 12 hours a day in library and yet somehow I met George."
Joining the Bushes were Vice President Dick Cheney and wife Lynne, nine Cabinet members and two Supreme Court justices, Antonin Scalia and Stephen Breyer.
News organizations hosted show business and sports stars such as Goldie Hawn, LL Cool J, Richard Gere, Jane Fonda and the starting quarterbacks of this year's Super Bowl, Tom Brady of the New England Patriots and Donovan McNabb of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Award winners announced earlier this month:
_Ron Fournier of The Associated Press, the Merriman Smith Award for presidential coverage under deadline pressure for his stories on Bush's victory over John Kerry.
_Susan Page of USA Today, the Aldo Beckman Award for her stories on the presidency and the presidential campaign.
_Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Edgar A. Poe Award for a series of stories on athletes' steroid use.
Presidents since Calvin Coolidge have attended the dinner hosted by the association, which was established in 1914 as a bridge between the press corps and the White House.
Some people on the right AND the left clearly didn't get the jokes.......
As you said, Laura was poking fun at the media and their brutal criticism of the Bush clan. As Rush says, she was using absurdity to illustrate the absurd. If anyone really thinks that Laura is even close to being a desperate housewife, they should see some of the pictures we have seen on the DITL threads. The people in the audience only wish that they had marriages as secure and devoted as the First Couple. And yet they have ridiculed the Bushes for their old-fashioned relationship and life-style. Laura was poking fun at her audience and had them rolling in the aisles because they thought she was making fun of her husband and his family. And they think he's dumb.
NEWS FLASH! This is NOT a desperate housewife!
She was making fun of them, and they thought she was making fun of HIM.
That's part of what made it so funny. Not only is she witty and charming and madly in love with her husband.....as he is with her....... but her intelligence (and her 'dumb' husband's) runs circles around them.
I'm going to watch it again today........... the comedy may be even funnier the second time around. :o)
The joke's on YOU, you stupid leftists!
BTW, I just poked through the CSPAN website, and FreeRepublic is listed under their blog list (although we're really a forum) ... while DUh is nowhere to be found. I guess they don't have a Moonbat category.
Great picture!
I agree with you.
The First Lady making jokes based on sexual smut that passes for today's culture is very unclassy, in my opinion.
"Again, she must have known that being a "desperate housewife" has entered the vernacular as being a housewife looking for an extramarital sexual relationship."
Nonsense.
It is a reference to the television show about a housewife that wants more excitement in her life.
Mrs. Bush can have fun. I don't fault her for going to Chippendale's.
The problem with that argument is that she DIDN'T.
Always thought of Mrs. G. H. W. Bush (Barbara) as the First Grandmother as that's the way she came across to me. Mrs. G. W. Bush comes across as "THE FIRST LADY" in every sense of the word.
Both seemed to embody the finest attributes of true Southern Womanhood through their gentility.
"I'm proud of George. He's learned a lot about ranching since that first year, when he tried to milk the horse. What's worse, it was a male horse," she said.
Are you an idiot?
The joke is that he was trying to milk the horse.....get milk from the breasts.
However, since the horse was male (and I am sure you are aware that males have nipples), milk did not come out from the nipples.
Man, if you actually think she was describing him getting off the horse, you are a dullar of the extreme degree.
It was an obvious spoof. She has one of the observably best marriages in the country.
The people making a big deal out of this, and drawing conclusions that are completely false (and absurd) are the ones who are 'desperate,' IMO.
Or your mind is in the gutter...........
Her smile in that picture is priceless. :o)
The President's wife was not joking about her husband trying to get off the horse.
She was joking about him trying to learn how to milk horses.
The joke is that the nipples he grabbed onto (I am sure you realize that MALES have nipples, just not big breasts unless they are Michael Moore) were those of a MALE. Since only FEMALES give milk, his attempt at extracting milk from the nipples......not the penis you idiots....failed.
There is no reason to think she was talking about jacking off the horse. The joke is that he was trying to get milk from the teets of the horse, but since the horse was male, he didn't have any luck.
I watch South Park and have a purer mind than those of you saying Laura was talking about masturbabing the horse. There is no such connection unless you want to find one.
LOL
I just gotta laugh!!
great post!! LOL
Thanks!
Two bits, Spiff and tomahawk..............please read rw's post, and then APOLOGIZE to the First Lady for what your own (dirty) minds were thinking.
