Mrs. Bush Steals Show at Reporters' Dinner

WASHINGTON - First lady Laura Bush stole the show with a surprise comedy routine that ripped President Bush and brought an audience that included much of official Washington and a dash of Hollywood to a standing ovation at a dinner honoring award-winning journalists.

The president planned a speech late Saturday at the 91st annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner, but was quickly "interrupted" by his wife in an obviously planned ploy.

"Not that old joke, not again," she said to the delight of the audience. "I've been attending these dinners for years and just quietly sitting there. I've got a few things I want to say for a change."

The president sat down and she proceeded to note that he is "usually in bed by now" and said she told him recently, "If you really want to end tyranny in the world you're going to have to stay up later."

She outlined a typical evening: "Nine o'clock, Mr. Excitement here is sound asleep and I'm watching `Desperate Housewives'." Comedic pause. "With Lynne Cheney. Ladies and gentlemen, I am a desperate housewife."

But she said they obviously were destined to be together as a couple because "I was the librarian who spent 12 hours a day in library and yet somehow I met George."

Joining the Bushes were Vice President Dick Cheney and wife Lynne, nine Cabinet members and two Supreme Court justices, Antonin Scalia and Stephen Breyer.

News organizations hosted show business and sports stars such as Goldie Hawn, LL Cool J, Richard Gere, Jane Fonda and the starting quarterbacks of this year's Super Bowl, Tom Brady of the New England Patriots and Donovan McNabb of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Award winners announced earlier this month:

_Ron Fournier of The Associated Press, the Merriman Smith Award for presidential coverage under deadline pressure for his stories on Bush's victory over John Kerry.

_Susan Page of USA Today, the Aldo Beckman Award for her stories on the presidency and the presidential campaign.

_Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Edgar A. Poe Award for a series of stories on athletes' steroid use.

Presidents since Calvin Coolidge have attended the dinner hosted by the association, which was established in 1914 as a bridge between the press corps and the White House.

You're so funny ping.

Read some of these posters' reactions to Laura's presentation. She was great!

Examples: "If you really want to end tyranny in the world you're going to have to stay up later."

But she said they obviously were destined to be together as a couple because "I was the librarian who spent 12 hours a day in library and yet somehow I met George."

I find Laura Bush ravishing. IMHO

58 year old male here, married to the same lovely girl for 32 years, I find her very, very attractive too. I wouldn't say "ravishing", but you certainly may. ;-)

G.W. and she look so happy together also!

I am so sad I missed this. It looked hilarious. (Our local news played a clip.) Is there anywhere I could get a transcript?

Ditto.........

Joking about milking a male horse is somehow cultured? Saying your a "desperate housewife" (implying the desire to commit adultery) is cultured? And what culture would that be? I'm glad I'm not cultured of this stuff is considered normal among the "cultured" crowd. Oh, if this stuff was on Comedy Central, I'd understand and change the channel. But coming from our First Lady, I'm so sorry if it offends me.

Wow. Remind me to invite you to my next party.

p.s. --- "Well, it's not my fault you go around with your collar buttoned too damn tight." --- lol.

Daughter........SHE doesn't watch it either.

It was to tweak her husband's critics, and it was funny!

I also thought Cedrick's bit on Condi & Lizza was hilarious.

That would be funny!

I've seen a couple of articles already, though, and the ever dense media DID seem to pick up on the fact that Laura was indeed there, and rocked the place with her fabulous sense of humor.

This is great stuff! Full of surprises, these two are........

LOL! Thanks for speaking for the rest of us. You're being sarcastic, right?

That's OK, bill. You can be in the 15% who don't like her, along with all the communists and feminazis......

Okay - I agree with that.

However, there is a large group within the dems who HATE HILLARY and do not want her as their nominee.

I'm very aware there is a huge war going on between the Kerry/Kennedy/Dean group and the Clinton group. This is splitting the party. They don't talk about it - but there have already been a few salvos over the bow for each.

Laura Bush DOESN'T watch "Desperate Housewives." It was a joke...........that obviously went over your heads.......

No, you don't get it. Let's review.

"I am married to the President of the United States and here's our typical evening. Nine o'clock. Mr. Excitement here is sound asleep. And I'm watching Desperate Housewives. With Lynne Cheney. Ladies and gentlemen, I am a Desperate Housewife. I mean, if those women on that show think they're desperate they ought to be with George. (Uncomfortable laughter from audience. Camera pans to a red-faced President Bush.)

The joke was not just about simply watching a smutty TV show which centers upon housewives committing adultery. Obviously she knows that the show is controversial, or she wouldn't have brought it up to get a laugh. Would the joke have been funny if she said she stays home watching The Weather Channel? No.

Then she continues and says that SHE is a desperate housewife. Again, she must have known that being a "desperate housewife" has entered the vernacular as being a housewife looking for an extramarital sexual relationship. Or she wouldn't have used it for another laugh from the leftist media and hollywood deviant crowd.

Then she goes further and says that those adulterous women on the show would be even more so if they were married to George Bush like she is. The camera panned to the President who chuckled but who had a red face. Even he knew that Laura had gone too far. Little did he know that she was going to go on to tell a strip club joke and a joke about the President masturbating a horse.

Look, I really like President George Bush and first lady Laura Bush. They've brought back dignity to the White House that was gone for 8 years under the Clinton debacle. This comedy routine was not dignified, it showed a severe lack of class, and it was a stab in the back of Christian conservative Republicans who thought more of the President and his wife and who came out in droves in two elections to vote for him.

Can you imagine the scandal if Hillary Clinton had uttered such smut? Free Republic would have gone wild and rightfully so. Laura Bush utters this trash and the first post criticizing it on Free Republic was actually deleted by the moderator.

Wow. All I can say is, you have a very dirty mind.

You need to clean up your act there, Spiff, and get your mind out of the gutter.

It was all a joke.......and if you knew anything about this First Lady, you would realize that.

btw, I'm a very conservative, very moral, very Christian woman who sat there with my very conservative, very moral and very Christian husband, and laughed til we were on the floor at this very lovely, classy lady using comic absurdity to tweak the stupid left who think she's a boring Stepford wife.

(I suppose you think Lynn Cheney really puts dollar bills into Chippendale's scanty clothing too, eh? Joke, spiff........joke.)

Hey. Some people just do not get jokes. I doubt very much if she has watched that show. I really enjoyed her speech and it seemed that everyone there did too. I did see several who looked like they had eaten a green persimmon.

You and I are on the same page. To think the President jacking off a horse was funny and this from the lips of the first lady. Did I miss something? I have a great sense of humor especially directed at myself but somehow I found this skit from Laura to be mean and cruel. This skit only affirmed to the left that we are as tasteless and classless as they are.

The point of the horse story was that he wasn't a rancher, and was ignorant about animals.

Maybe it's because I AM innocent that I can hardly believe the stuff you guys are saying...........

It wasn't tasteless or classless at all. Did you even see it, or are you going with Spiff's interpretation?
