Family's Dog Eaten By Alligator After Chasing Ducks To Pond

POSTED: 7:12 am EDT April 29, 2005 UPDATED: 7:16 am EDT April 29, 2005

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- An Orange County family is devastated after one of their dogs was attacked and killed by an alligator on Thursday.

R.J. Trudell opened the door of his Hunter's Creek home to feed some ducks in the yard. Gizmo, one of the Trudell's Jack Russell terriers, darted out the door and ran after the ducks, chasing them into the pond.

That's when an alligator grabbed him.

"The first thing I yelled was, 'Kathy, get a towel, because Gizmo's gonna be wet.' It didn't even come to my mind that there was even the gator there or didn't even notice him," explained Trudell.

Nuisance Control came out to the Trudell's home after the attack. They trapped the five and a half foot gator and killed it.

Alligator meat is supposed to be good meat, better than beef anyway.

Hardly. It really doesn't have much flavor at all unless you season the hell out of it.

In PA, hunters are to shoot coyotes on sight.

Example: Two years ago we were putting on a drive at the end of the first week of deer season. 6 walkers were pushing some thick pines when I hear one of them on the radio say there is a coyote running around in there. Then I hear my dad say to shoot it if they get a shot. Next thing you know *POW!*. Guy kept it and was going to have it mounted since it was clean and nice looking.

From what I understand, they were killing coyotes not only because they were killing livestock, but also because they have a tendency to mistake small children and sometimes young teenagers and short people for "livestock".

ALL alligators should be killed or put in cages, along with bears, mountain lions and other predators, including pedaphiles

Several years back, in a suburb of Tampa, a HUGE gator traveled from the river to the sidewalk of a Steak and Ale Restaurant. The wild game people were called and put him to death immediately. This may sound crazy, but I felt rather sorry for the poor ol' gator.

Did the ducks get killed? Did the people in the neighborhood there get killed? Applying your logic then everything in that eco-system should get killed. I mean they are there. Right? When you ask a DumbA-- question, a DumbA-- will give you an answer.

ALL trapping is illegal, no matter what type of trap

Yeesh! MA's braindead. Although Andover's full of rich yuppies, when I was there, I noticed that there were only a couple of convenience stores and coffee places. Everyone was doing their shopping over the border 10 minutes away in NH, land of no sales tax. I tried explaining to ex that MA's bleeding their economy away, but being a liberal he didn't get it. I don't know how you elected a halfway decent guy like Romney.

Why not a deal between Massachusetts and Florida? Trap the coyotes and fox and send them South to feed the gators.

WILMINGTON -- The vicious coyote attack on an off-duty Wilmington police officer and his 4-year-old daughter was extremely unusual, and the animal is likely ill with rabies or canine distemper, wildlife experts said yesterday. This animal was later confirmed to be a coyote.
I did a google on Massachusetts coyote attack - found several instances. They are also having problems in RI.
The sad part is that you can't do anything to protect yourself. Yet the U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services (WS) sharpshooters, who are brought in from as far away as Colorado at taxpayer expense. The coyote shootings are part of USFWS's ongoing 'avian diversity' project at the refuge, a deceptively named program that amounts to killing potential predators, whether they be mammals or birds. http://www.hsus.org/wildlife/wildlife_news/monomoy_coyotes_under_attack_again.html

Gramma Lou, I disagree with you. The animal was doing what it does naturally. The dog invaded the gator space and he got eaten for it. What did the gator do that was unnatural? The family is responsible for their pet.

Why did the gator have to be killed?

Once the gator gets a taste for dog, it's useless as a swamp animal.

It would spend the rest of its life stalking neighborhoods searching for unsuspecting family dogs which it would gobble down with no remorse whatsoever.

Cats, alligators, fox, panther, manatee, deer...that't what we do. If they are in our areas or territory ..it must be done. We are at the top of the food chain...it's only natural.
