Family's Dog Eaten By Alligator After Chasing Ducks To Pond

POSTED: 7:12 am EDT April 29, 2005 UPDATED: 7:16 am EDT April 29, 2005

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- An Orange County family is devastated after one of their dogs was attacked and killed by an alligator on Thursday.

R.J. Trudell opened the door of his Hunter's Creek home to feed some ducks in the yard. Gizmo, one of the Trudell's Jack Russell terriers, darted out the door and ran after the ducks, chasing them into the pond.

That's when an alligator grabbed him.

"The first thing I yelled was, 'Kathy, get a towel, because Gizmo's gonna be wet.' It didn't even come to my mind that there was even the gator there or didn't even notice him," explained Trudell.

Nuisance Control came out to the Trudell's home after the attack. They trapped the five and a half foot gator and killed it.

"Why did the gator have to be killed?"

I live in Florida and I can tell you, they always kill the gator. I always feel sorry for the gators; they get put to death for doing what comes naturally to them.

It's the old alligator/duck trick....small dogs fall for it everytime.... It's very popular here in Southeast Texas.

We don't allow bears and wolves to exist in highly populated areas, so why in the hell aren't 75% of the Alligators in Florida turned into boots and belts?

Alligator meat is supposed to be good meat, better than beef anyway.

Bet if you ask the neighbors Trudell probably showed the gator off to his fiends from NewYawk or where ever they came from and raved about its presence and his ability to live with nature untill:
Nature took out his punney little yapping Gizmo

Those gators are pretty smart. If you eat ducks, pretty soon your pond is empty. But if you leave the ducks alone, you get a steady supply of stupid dog meat for lunch!

I'm so glad I live in a State where there isn't anything around that wants to eat me.

A few years ago, a little dachshund in Boca Raton, Florida, was let outside by its family....who'd already lost a dog to alligators. The dachshund was gobbled up whole(the little boy saw this from the back door.) Thinking their dog was lost forever, the family was amazed a short time later when there came a scratching at the back door...and there was the dachshund, hale and hearty! She'd been swallowed whole and promptly dug her way out of the gator's side. The vet said her instincts to go down a badger hole were what saved her. Dachshunds fight tooth and claw and only need a small hole to come out. The alligator was found floating belly up, dead, in the pond. Score one for dachshunds!

It looks better on a sign than "Don't F*** with the Gator, Stupid."

I suspect a vast right duck-wing conspiracy! Obviously, ducks lured the unsuspecting dog toward the gator! I bet Pres. Bush is involved; after all his brother is Gov. of Florida. This horrible attack took place in florida! Cooincidence? I think not! Where is the congressional investigation!

.....They are very confident dogs, generally speaking.....

The FReeper Lancer had a JRT to accompany him on FReeps. The dog was allowed to run free by the US Capitol police because they realized the dog was firmly under control although not on a leash.

The dog was retrieving a tennis ball to the amusement of the FReepers gathered on the capitol steps. Some wise acre threw a second tennis ball and the dog retrieved one in its mouth and rolled the other back with front paws. A stellar performance and completely unrehearsed.

Already done. I have a great vet just 1/4 mile from me (even open sundays!), when I go sailing for a week each year I board them over there and while they are there they get the works, shots, physicals etc... Works out great for them and me.
Nataku X - the way I understand the issue ALL trapping is illegal, no matter what type of trap. You have to get a permit from the state if you need to do any trapping on your own land!
Story blends well with the story about those guys getting arrested for finding money on their own property in MA.

Canadienne. I know. I married a "one L" Trudel... :) Best move I ever made (and we're not moving to Florida!)
