A totemic figure in L.A., Mr. Hayes has long emphasized problem-solving and individual responsibility. If you want to stop kids from shooting people , Mr. Hayes has told appalled black preachers and activists, stop blaming cops and "white folks" for urban tragedy and start blaming the lackadaisical inner-city family culture you support.
Mr. Hayes spent last fall tooling around the fortified neighborhoods of South Los Angeles, knocking on security screens and urging stunned residents to vote Bush. He explained that the Democratic Party was the Klan's party in the 20th century, and the party of the slave trade before that. A lot of people he met didn't know their pre-1960s history. He's ever unflappable. In early December, he appeared on Fox News to vociferously defend the right of Condi Rice to be Republican. His segment was introduced by a bemused Brit Hume, who hardly knew what to make of the Rasta Republican.

I met him also about 20 years ago at a ministers house. He was a ball of fire back then and has continued to be one. He marches to a different drummer and it scares the h*ll out of the Democratic establishment here and the LA Times

CROSS COUNTRY
Rasta Republican
Meet Los Angeles's Ted Hayes. He's black, dreadlocked--and belongs to the GOP.
BY JILL STEWART
Thursday, April 28, 2005 12:01 a.m.
LOS ANGELES--Condoleezza Rice and Ward Connerly once epitomized black Republicans in California. But their ilk now also includes Ted Hayes, a social activist and inner-city coach whose billowing robes and dreadlocks don't exactly conjure up an image of the GOP.
More blacks than ever support vouchers and faith-based initiatives, and side with President Bush on gay marriage. Mr. Hayes recently made the transition himself, ending a long journey for this former leftist who founded Dome Village, an outcropping of pod-like homeless shelters along the freeway in downtown Los Angeles.
There are other prominent black Republicans in California, of course, such as syndicated radio host Larry Elder and community relations expert Joe Hicks. But even among these unusual thinkers, Mr. Hayes stands out. He's an intense critic of L.A.'s powerful "black old guard"--Democratic politicians, charity bosses and inner-city preachers who, for a generation, have responded to poverty and illiteracy by demanding government programs and blaming white racism.
Not surprisingly, plenty of people wish pesky black Republicans like Mr. Hayes would just slink away. He has skewered L.A.'s entrenched black leaders as "Negro officials," and he has the street cred to get away with it. As L.A. endured another crisis between black leaders and cops recently, he refused to denounce police for shooting dead a 13-year-old, Devin Brown, after a car chase. Instead, Mr. Hayes's press release faulted black church leaders who, despite their great power, rarely point to the lack of parental responsibility...

La-La Land Pols: We Can't Say Muslims Caused 9/11
[Ted Hayes, L.A. City Council, anti-terrorism?]
www.newsmax.com ^ | September 12, 2003 | NewsMax
Posted on 09/12/2003 3:19 PM PDT by RonDog
Friday, Sept. 12, 2003La-La Land Pols: We Can't Say Muslims Caused 9/11Members of the Los Angeles City Council say they blundered when they signed a resolution acknowledging that Muslims carried out the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Councilmen Antonio Villaraigosa and Jan Perry admit signing the motion without reading it. It said that "in remembering the victims of Sept. 11 we also remember and acknowledge the truth as to who the perpetrators themselves claim to be, that is, Muslims, carrying out the will of the Deity of their religion known as Islam."
The resolution, drafted by Ted Hayes, an advocate for homeless people, also called on Muslims to "intensify their denouncements of those members within their religion and community who continue to engage in acts of terror throughout the world," the Los Angeles Times reported today.
"To have that very divisive and very insensitive resolution is really shocking," fumed Maher Hathout, spokesman for Islamic Center of Southern California and senior adviser of Muslim Public Affairs Council. "It is completely contrary to the spirit of Los Angeles.
"It is singling out Muslims as a suspected group. It is using language about the religion of Islam that's completely unacceptable."
Villaraigosa agreed and fretted: "They put motions like this in front of you all the time. They put it in front of me, and I signed it."
Perry also apologized. "Some of the language was provocative, in retrospect," she said.
Hayes said he was surprised the council members had signed "the politically incorrect" document.
"They could have prevented this controversy," he said. "If they're not reading this simple document clearly through, what else are they not reading clearly through?"

Bush backers stare down their nemesis in Santa Monica
by Howard Blume
Okay, so what if Los Angeles lacks the swing-voter clout of Davenport, Iowa? Last week, Southern California, too, got the same-day treatment from the candidates, which sparked a first-rate mano a mano between the faithful.
While John Kerry appeared unchallenged at Cal State Dominguez Hills, zealots faced off at the intersection of Ocean Park Boulevard and 31st Street in Santa Monica, just one block north of Santa Monica airport, where George W. Bush was appearing at a dinner that put a cool $3 million in his war chest.
And political artifice mirrored political reality: The outcome was too close to call, though it seemed more impressive somehow for more than 500 Bushies to turn out in this left-coast bastion, even if at least as many anti-Bushes had gathered, too.
Bush man Ron Smith had been preparing since early July, arriving at noon to stake out the intersection. "We had both corners," said the white-haired Smith, who sells cars on the Internet. When the enemy arrived, "There was a confrontation. And I personally went over there and got all of our people off that side, because that was our deal with the police. They have one side; we have the other."
Facing north, it was Bush people to the right, anti-Bushes to the left. The veritable standoff had Genevieve Peters beaming. The 41-year-old teacher and Beverly Hills resident founded L.A. for Bush. "It started out with eight people around a table, and its grown to hundreds hundreds and hundreds," said Peters. Democrats, she explained, stand for hate and for vengeance and a globalization that has no strength or character or anything thats for America. America, from the beginning of time, had an identity and culture. And theyre trying to decimate our identity and culture . . . to some melting pot like Europe."
She added, "Democrats have gone in and said, Were just all one. Every culture has a place here. No! Were an American culture."
It was hard to hear over the amplified voice of a Bushie in a black hat. "On the other corner, I see dreadlocks and hippies, he said mockingly, "and I see girlie men." That started a chant of "girlie men, girlie men" from the streets right wing. Next to Black Hat stood an elderly Vietnamese man dressed in green beret and camouflage. He held an American flag in his right hand, the yellow-and-red flag of South Vietnam in his left. A Bush-Cheney sign hung around his neck. He pumped his black-booted heel up and down in time to patriotic tunes and redneck rock blasting from a boom box. Nearby, a blind young man sang out, "You cant take away my Bush."
Black Hat wasnt quite right about the dreads; his side included homeless activist Ted Hayes, whose dreads equal anyones. He had an amplified bullhorn in one hand and a genuine, polished rams horn in the other as he improvised chants. "Power to the right-wingers!" he shouted into the bullhorn...

Some background for non-LA or CA freepers. LA Weakly is a leftist degenrate free weekly -- although it doesn't seem all that different than the LA Slimes. LA Weakly seems to be funded by a major moving picture industry less old than the one in Hollywood.
The article does not mention Free Republic, although in the past they often have. I'd say they learned they don't want to even mention the name Free Republic.
Of course the "zealots" of the title are meant to be us, not the commies...

Hurdles blend sweet victory, bitter defeat

ATHENS, Greece - They stretched, they leaned, they reached out desperately into the sweet, sultry evening breeze with every last ounce of energy. But American Joanna Hayes and Canadian Perdita Felicien, both gold medal favorites, were going in totally opposite directions.
In the finals of the women's 100-meter hurdles Tuesday, they combined to create human athletic drama: the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.
For Felicien, it was the worst moment of her competitive life, a Did Not Finish in the 2004 Athens Olympics. Fifteen meters from the start, one of her ruby-red spiked slippers crashed into the center of the first hurdle, nearly splitting it. She plunged onto the track, dragging down Russia's Irena Shevchenko, who was on her right in lane six.
You could see her reaching ... leaning ... grasping ... all to no avail.
For Hayes, it was the most exhilarating 12.37 seconds of her competitive life. She blazed down the track and was rewarded with an Olympic record and an Olympic gold medal for beating Ukrainian Olena Krasovska (12.45) and American Melissa Morrison (12.56).
She bounded across the finish line, then joyfully reached for the sky.
The 75,000 spectators gasped in one breath, then cheered in another.
Hayes, who spent much of June and July training in suburban St. Louis with Bobby and Jackie Joyner Kersee, danced and pranced and skipped around the track, wrapped in the stars and stripes. With blissful tears streaming down from under her dark sunglasses onto her cheeks, she waved to all the flag-waving spectators and posed for all the photographers who raced behind her.
Unlike other American medal winners, Hayes never bothered to try to be cool and dispassionate. She practically bubbled and floated on her victory lap. She laughed. She cried. Then she laughed some more. She acted like this was the greatest day of her life.
Of course, it was.
"Oh boy, this feels soooo good, better than I imagined," she said, beaming, after the race, clinging to a small American flag in her hand, wearing a larger one like a patriotic shawl. "I know (the USOC) wants us to be low-key and all, but I'm sorry, you only get one chance to run that victory lap. I have no idea if I'll ever have another Olympic moment, so hey, I told myself last night, 'If you get the chance, enjoy it.'"

This man is a Republican because he has conservative values coupled with an intelligence level that enables him to see through the smoke and determine the source of the fire.
However, this should not be a political issue, this is a right vs. wrong issue and the Democrats and the so-called "Black Leaders" are enablers for the lazy inner-city parent.

Bump = Ted Hayes is an inspiration to me....especially right now. I've been shaken lately by what has been going on in the Senate and H of Representatives and certain committees. If this man can stand up unashamed to back the GOP in the environment he's got to work with then I feel like a fool going wobbly on the GOP in the middle of red state Texas. Thanks Ted, I needed that. And thank you RonDog for your post.

Hollywood spotlight on security
by Ian Youngs
BBC News Online entertainment staff in Hollywood
With the numbers of police, roadblocks, sniffer dogs, FBI bomb squads, Swat teams and helicopters in Hollywood, it is hard to believe that it is just the scene of a movie award ceremony and not a war zone itself.
The area around the Kodak Theatre, where the Oscars are taking place, is in lock-down mode, with so much security that it is almost impossible to get within view of the venue unless you are supposed to be there.
About a mile of Hollywood Boulevard, where the theatre is situated, is shut off to traffic and any pedestrians hoping to walk down are all being searched by police.
This year, not only have organisers and security services had to face the threat of terrorist attack in reprisal for the war in Iraq, they have also had to deal with protest groups hoping to hijack the world's media to make their points...
How can people who live in a fantasy world opine on real world political issues?
Ted Hayes, protestor
...On the other side of Hollywood, several hundred vocal protesters held a counter-demonstration and denounced actors who had spoken out against the war.
Both pro- and anti-war protesters turned out
"We want to tell these [anti-war] Hollywood 100 that without the British and American military, the freedom and the liberty that their existence provides them - they couldn't be who they are," said Ted Hayes...
