Nick Coleman: In the Coultergeist's wake, a teachable moment. A rip on Ann Coulter
Star Tribune ^ | April 27, 2005 | Nick Coleman

Posted on 04/27/2005 1:04:59 PM PDT by abork

Ann Coulter is gone, but now we're having fun. Because listening to her is like hitting your head with a hammer: It's fun when she stops.

The conservative pundit on spiked heels came to town last week, and they are still picking up the pieces at two citadels of saintly scholarship in Minnesota -- St. Olaf College in Northfield and the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul. I have already written about the miniskirted screechfest at St. Thomas, and I'd be glad to never mention it again. Except for the fact that left behind her, amid the wreckage of civil discourse, is that useful flotsam often found in the wake of a disaster: A teachable moment.

How fragile the left can be. They dish it out but can't take it.

In essence the author offered nothing concrete to refute whatever her positions were, and he kissed up to the campus President.

"Even if you agreed with her political views -- and she has an absolute right to express them -- her manner of speech was so inflammatory and her derogatory ripostes so intimidating that both campuses she plucked last week (a total take of $50,000 or more) are still reverberating. That's not a good thing, but it has the potential to have good consequences."

So the spirited discussion of current sociopolitical topics on college campuses is "not a good thing"? I thought college was all about the free expression of ideas and all that crap.

On a previous thread on the subject, somebody asked for specifics.

I'm still wondering what exactly Coulter said that was so inflammatory.

Lots of bluster from critics and "social commentators", but no facts.

Did the critics attend? Did they get a transcript or a recording?

The "screechfest" apparently applies to her factless opponents.

Nick Coleman would pay to have Ann Coulter "hammer" him. (I don't mean in any sexual way, as I am talking about a real 10 pound ball peen type hammer.)
If I were to measure Coleman's, Kennedy's, Maher's, Schumer's hate speech with Coulter's, the libs would win.
I love it when lib journalists squeal when man-handled by Ann Coulter. I am not saying it is right, but quite entertaining. Was Ann addressing the lib or conservative Lutherans?

I wonder if Nick has taken the time to write a column condemning the leftist-Fascist thugs who have been attacking conservative campus speakers by hurling salad dressing, pies, etc. I doubt it.

Hey left!

Anne is right, you are wrong.

She is smarter than you.

She has a better wit than you.

She thinks on her feet better than you.

Deal with it!

One lesson from Coulter's hit-and-run assaults, however, is that the time when the groves of the academy seemed above the battle are coming to an end. The grind of the culture-political wars at large may soon mean broken crockery in the cafeteria. If so, Coulter won't only be $50,000 richer, she will also be smirking. This is just what she wants: shouts, insults, angry venting, food fights.

Poor little Nicky is a little confused. It was Coulter's opponents -- not her supporters -- that decided to throw food. Isn't it funny how Coulter's mockery of liberal arguments is "hate-filled" and a "screechfest" and a "wreckage of civil discourse" but the bile from Airhead America or Bill Mahar is considered engaging and spirited discussion.

I am willing bet that this person had no problem with the Nuremberg rally that was the Wellstone memorial two years ago.
