It's been described as "the worst flu you ever had" and pain that never goes away. Fibromyalgia affects some 3 million to 6 million Americans -- primarily women.
Many struggle just to convince their doctor of their pain because symptoms are varied and no test can diagnose it. One woman finally found an answer herself.

Darlene discovered the key to her relief was in the foods she ate and those she eliminated. The trigger seemed to be a substance called excitotoxins. It's found in monosodium glutamate, high fructose corn syrup, even vegetables high in glutamate.
Without it, Darlene is like a new person.

Eliminating MSG and aspartame can be tough to do. Many processed foods contain these items and the consumer may be unaware since they can be listed as other ingredients.
According to Truth in Labeling Campaign, the following substances always contain MSG:
autolyzed yeast, calcium caseinate, gelatin, glutamate, glutamic acid, hydrolyzed protein, monopotassium glutamate, monosodium glutamate, sodium caseinate, textured protein, yeast extract , yeast food, and yeast nutrient.

Also, notice how this disease came into being at about the time that aspertame came onto the market.
What are the symptoms of fibromyalgia?
OH....THANK YOU SO MUCH. I AM USING CAPS BECAUSE I AM SO GLAD YOU POSTED THIS. My daughter suffers terribly from this and the meds have now become a problem, too. It is a terrible disease (or whatever they classify it as). I have sent her the article. Bless you for posting this. I will pray it helps her.
They make cheese (mozzerella or cheddar) in indiv packaged strips about the size of a pencil. I take these to work as a good, low carb snack.
Hard boiled eggs are ok too.
I got off of insulin w/Atkins.
Yes, what is this powder? My massage therapist told me she had something along this line also. Something about eating certain foods that cause the yeast in your guts to go haywire. I've been diagnosed with IBS and I think this is part of the cause. I have learned which foods not to eat. And I switched to Diet RC to get away from the aspartame.
Several of those ingrediants are soy products.

Examples of mainstream medical opinion on fibromyalgia include an editorial published in Spine in January (which I cant post):
Labeling Woefulness: The Social Construction of Fibromyalgia.
Recent article by the same author, which I can:
You just broke the law! You cannot tell anyone the truth (even if published in a government report) on how to avoid or cure any ailment by name without written permission from the FDA. If you think I am joking you are sadly mistaken.
yes - I have been eating payday peanut bars - seems to be going OK with the diet (but purists will say WAY too many carbs- probably true)
"Commercial Spam" is a violation of FR policy. Unfortunately, fybromyalgia threads tend to degenerate into a giant commercial for OTC therapies of one sort or another. And then the thread gets pulled. Try clicking on the "fibromyalgia" keyword above to see what I mean.
Is there anyway to truly research the effect of these commercial products? Probably not.
You could check to see if they are FDA approved, or approved by the FDA equivalent in countries like Germany and Japan, who do an excellent job of OTC research.
is diet soda allowed on atkins?
Thanks for all the suggestions!!!!
I gave up the stuff over 20 years ago. I found myself having headaches, confusion and memory loss within 30 minutes of drinking a diet soda. At the time I had access to some FDA journals at the office and started reading about Aspartame. There were a lot of reports from doctors about patients reporting similar problems. There were also suspicions about convulsions, brain tumors and blindness being connected with consumption of the stuff. The sweetener stayed on the market. None of the reports from physicians seemed to have enough statistical validity to sway the FDA. Given my own experience, I decided to avoid Aspartame regardless of the FDA's inaction. It's in a lot more products as time goes on, but it's not hard to avoid if you eat fresh foods and cook at home.
You mean CNN/Channel 14 News broke the law.
Are you talking about acidolphilus? It should be on everyone's list to take on a daily basis. Make sure you get the enteric kind, so it goes into the lower intestines where it is really needed. The yeast-free diet is difficult, but the benefits are amazing. Weight loss for me was incredibly fast (I guess b/c you are pretty much eating protein and veggies).
I suffered from the fibro symptoms for 3 years before I figured out that the diet as well as bioidentical progesterone supplementation (not the synthetic stuff!)were what I needed. No more muscle aches, head aches, IBS, etc.....If I stray from the diet or don't take my progesterone it comes back. Sometimes I just can't stand doing the diet all the time, but I pay for it if I don't. =)
I am for legalization- I avoided it and tried to be law abiding for many years until I said 'what the heck' one weekend in canada (where it is practically legal anyway) and had the best sleep and felt good all weekend. It iw WAYYYY less harmless than alchohol and I think there are actual health benefite (my hair stopped falling out, and I laugh at those 'enlargemnt' spams now -if you catch my drift)
Just like anything else- good in moderation- I was wayyy overboard when I was younger and it does make you nervouse and paranoid if you do too much
I think this is more than just food allergies. I have a friend that suffers from this. I believe it's very real. I wouldn't want to be in her shoes.
PMS relief.
I could care less if someone, in the privacy of their own home, sits on the couch and has a beer, a cocktail, or a joint. Just don't drive, lol.
ping for later
