Gyllenhaal Refuses Apology About 9/11 Comment
Newsday ^ | April 25, 2005 | ROBERT KAHN

Even as a Web site devoted to her was overwhelmed with scathing criticism, actress Maggie Gyllenhaal refused Monday to back down from her statement that the United States "is responsible in some way" for the attacks on the World Trade Center.

"Not to have the courage to ask these questions of ourselves is to betray the victims of 9/11," she said in a new statement issued by her publicist yesterday in response to the controversy.

The actress appears in "The Great New Wonderful," which features five stories about people living in the aftermath of the Twin Towers attack.

It began screening last week at the Tribeca Film Festival, which actor Robert DeNiro helped get off the ground in 2002 to help Lower Manhattan recover.

Gyllenhaal said on Friday on NY1, the all-news cable channel, that the movie dealt with complexities and subtleties of life after Sept. 11, 2001.

"Because I think America has done reprehensible things and is responsible in some way and so I think the delicacy with which it's dealt allows that to sort of creep in," she said on the channel.

A Web site on the actress, www.maggie-gyllenhaal.net, was besieged Monday with harsh words, some of them from city firefighters. The site posted a note saying the actress does not view the site.

"She won't see the comments so please don't leave hate messages," the site indicated.

Stupid is as stupid does. Waiting tables is an honorable profession.... Maybe she can get on the same shift as the Dixie Chicks at the local IHOP.

It's hard to believe that 2710 people visited her site. This is all trumped-up publicity for her new movie.

Why should I care what some airhead actress from Hollywood who I've never even heard of until now, thinks about the causes of militant Islamist jihad supporting primitive tribal dictatorships?

Oh...so NOT saying that the attack was deserved is a betrayal of those who died in the attacks? I'm certain that if they could speak, they would all say, "Say we deserved it, traitors!"

Is that what she's trying to express?

Well, it makes as much sense as her earlier description of her film as being 'very subtle and open', I suppose.

Just because someone is good at reading and interpreting someone else's words does not mean they have any idea about critically thinking and making decisions; this is especially true of Liberals.

Liberals only know what this weeks talking points from the DNC tell them to think...ask them anything beyond that, or if they can explain their position you will surely be mest by a scowl and a snarled "FASCIST!" in return, rather than an answer or explanation.

Ms. Gyllenhall has the right to express her opinion, however stupid, just as we have the right to BOYCOTT her movie, however good it may be.

Because I think America has done reprehensible things and is responsible in some way...

In what way, specifically, Maggie? I'd like to know and so would the State Department.

Idiot.

Yes Maggie, only rich, powerful, capitalist nations do reprehensible things. While people of color from third world dictatorships simply respond to "legitimate greivances".

And these idiots accuse Bush of seeing the world in terms of black & white.

And Maggie Gyllenhaal, would you agree that women who look cute and get raped are "in some way" responsible for their rape?

Donnie Darko was my favorite movie until her idiot brother called me and told me to vote for John Kerry. Now every time I try to watch it, I just think, "this guy doesn't have three brain cells to rub together."

Now I'll think the same thing about her every time I try to watch Secretary.
