WASHINGTON - In private talks with Majority Leader Bill Frist, the Senate's top Democrat has indicated a willingness to allow confirmation of at least two of President Bush's seven controversial appeals court nominees, but only as part of a broader compromise requiring Republicans to abandon threats to ban judicial filibusters, officials said Monday.
At the same time he offers to clear two nominees to the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals for approval, officials said Sen. Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record), D-Nev., wants a third appointee to be replaced by an alternative who is preferred by Michigan's two Democratic senators. The officials spoke only on condition of anonymity, citing the confidential nature of the conversations between the two leaders.
Reid issued a statement during the day saying he has had numerous conversations with senators in both parties in hopes of avoiding a showdown. "As part of any resolution, the nuclear option must be off the table," the statement concluded, referring to the GOP threat of banning judicial filibusters.

Right; I'll just bet Bush will let Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow pick one for him.
Sucker deal. Rude Rats offering to "compromise" re: their wrongly assertion of a power they were not given by the voters, just to establish the principle so they can rage on all summer long about W's Supreme Court nominee. They need to be slapped down hard.
another attempt to stall...
Two......TWO!
Ain't enough.
All seven.
If Frist compromises, at all, he's politcally finished in the GOP.
I sure hope he knows this.
Great googly moogly!!! That is an idiotic idea that would sacrifice every future conservative nominee by President Bush.
WHY are the Repubs compromising with the Rats? Isn't it time they acted like they had a pair?
Bend Over Here It Comes Again
Reid: "You f'd up, you trusted us."
Reid want's Frist to say those famous words,
"Read my lips, no new judges."
I'm beginning to think the whole damn government is a socialist/communist blockade and were just being sickled and hammered into place
He's got a very short window of opportunity to prove he has a pair of coglioni (check your Italian dictionary) or else his career in D.C. is effectively over. One would also hope that the phone lines between 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. and the Majority Leader's office are about to spontaneously combust right now.
Lucy: "Sure, Charlie Brown, I PROMISE I won't pull the football away when you try to kick it...."
Don't fall for it, Frist. You got them to blink. Didn't another RAT senator suggest as a compromise a time limit for the committee to act and then the candidate would automatically be up for a floor vote? If you are going to make a deal, that's the one to hold out for.
I would like to see Frist reach a compromise with
Reid, then Reid leak it to the press, and Frist
then nuke them in a surprise attack, come in low under
the radar!
That or do something else. They are hysterical about being out of power and will do and say anything to obstruct W's governing...
The media is so stupid. Reid cannot "offer" a compromise to get a third judge. That would require Bush to be in on the deal. Don't these people know the Constitution?
If, when the nominees came to the Senate floor, and the DemocRATs said that they were too extreme, why would the DemocRATs now allow some of those "too extreme" judges to be confirmed?
The DemocRATs know that they are losing this fight, and Frist and the Republicans should hold fast. No compromise. It's a win-win position.
Screw Reid and the rest of the Rats.
Frist BETTER NOT fall for any Reid "compromise" unless he wants a complete defunding of the NRSC. Show a spine Bill, or go back to the medical field.
"I've always said that we'd make sure the Senate went forward, but we're going to do it on our agenda, not their agenda," Reid said.
Since when does the party that's out of power in the legislative branch and the executive branch set the agenda. Are these people as delusional as they sound?
