Rita Preckshot went to a peace rally, and a fight broke out.
It started out as a typical Wednesday for Preckshot, a 49-year-old who stands about 5-foot-2 and has hearing aids in both ears. She was standing on her normal spot on Providence Road, holding her signs in support of American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. For nearly four years now, this has been Preckshots life from about 4:15 to about 5:45 in the afternoon once a week. She started her solo troop-support effort to counteract the peace protesters who stand a couple of blocks away at the intersection of Providence and Broadway. The peaceniks hold signs that say things such as "honk for peace" and "end the occupation."
They outnumber Preckshot every Wednesday, but she stands out there just the same, sometimes drawing another supporter or two to help her effort.
On this particular Wednesday - it was March 16 - her effort seemed to annoy a couple of the protesters. Not satisfied with their own peace protest, a pair of peaceniks grabbed their signs and made their way to Preckshot, who normally stands outside the Bloomers flower shop near Locust Street.
"Two of the guys from the corner walked down with a big sign that read End the occupation, " she remembers. One of them started taking pictures of a Preckshot supporter across the street, she says. "At some point, the other guy starts coming toward me."
For a diminutive woman, Preckshot can handle herself. Shes a former police officer, and she isnt easily intimidated. Still, a young man coming at her waving a sign in her face seemed a little aggressive, particularly from somebody supposedly advocating peace.

"He started taunting me and reached out and pushed on my shoulder," Preckshot says. "Each time he pushed, it got a little harder. When I saw his hand come at me again, I grabbed it. I felt fearful."
As Preckshot pushed the mans hand away, "he slugged me right in the face," she says.
Perhaps "Punch for peace" would have been a more appropriate sign.
The man, Paul Allaire, doesnt live in Boone County. He lists Arcadia as his home, though hes a frequent attendee at the Wednesday protests. He has been charged with third-degree misdemeanor assault for his alleged attack on Preckshot.
In that regard, Preckshot has no complaints.
What does confound her, however, is why her weekly adversaries werent more helpful when police came to the scene.
After the incident, Preckshot went to a nearby gas station to call the police, and they quickly arrived to take statements.
None of the peace activists, however, would give up Allaire.
Whooda thunk it! God Bless her.
she should be a FReeper! ..... oh wait - I think she is a FReeper. A top shelf FReeper at that.
What a tough guy. I sure wish this happened in front of me. They would have arrested the punk in the back of the ambulance.
Total Hypocrasy!
"We want PEACE..
Tow the party line or we'll kick your @ss!"
And they'll justify the use of violence to achieve peace...
Dems/Libs/commies...the same the world over...
maybe there is a FreeRepublic Purple Heart that should be awarded.
I sincerely hope this 'peaceful' man gets to spend some time in a lockup and becomes the 'piece full' man.
What a brave woman. Any man who punches a woman is worse than despicable.
Thanks for the post. This reminds me of what happened just before the election in Marietta, Ga (suburb of Atlanta). The Vietnam vets staked out a corner every Friday afternoon to protest Kerry and support our troops, and the peaceniks had finally had enough, so gathered at the other end of the historic town sqare on one particular day.
I was to join the Vietnam vets with my sign that said "Peace through strength -- Libya heard us" when I decided to stand on the crazy corner for a bit (a friend was videotaping from across the street). These so-called peace protesters were so ugly to me (I'm a typical 40ish mom-type). First they told me I couldn't stand there...they had a permit for that corner (which it turned out they did not). I politely said if they wanted to call police and police said I had to leave I would, but until then, my dad had died (in Vietnam) to preserve my right to stand on any streetcorner in America and say what I wanted to say. They were SHOCKED that I would not leave and continued to be ugly. Got into a discussion with them that did not turn violent, but their frustration with my arguments was apparent. I finally left after making my point (about 40 minutes later).

"In her heart, she believes most of the peace protesters feel the same way, even if they come down on a different side of the ideological spectrum."
She's being too kind.
Most of these "Peace" activists are Crypto-Communists, Neo-Bolsheviks and nihilists who hate the west and everything it stands for.
They should go to Mecca or Tehran and protest.
Some hero, punching out a little 52 year old lady. Too bad she didn't have any guys with her like the guys who beat up the pie-throwers who attacked Ann Coulter.
I would have allowed the punk to approach me. Maybe even push me. Had he swung at me, I would have stomped him into a puddle and pissed in it.
Don't be silly.
Guys like this only approach 52 year old, 5'2" women with hearing aids.
If you were there, they would just heckle you from far enough away for them to get a running start.
The beatings should continue until the Pro-War group learns what peace means.....
