A student-created memorial honoring Niagara Falls High School sophomore Anthony Tony Sheard is causing some stir in the community.
Sheard was shot and killed Wednesday night while allegedly trying to rob a pizza delivery man in the 1300 block of Pierce Ave. While police have linked him to gang activity in the past, friends, family and school officials remember a different side of Sheard.
Flowers litter the floor around Sheards locker located on the fourth floor of Niagara Falls High School. The locker is covered with photographs of Sheard, letters and posters. Messages include Rest In Peace and We Love You.
Putting notes on his locker is how some of our students are dealing with the grieving process, school Principal Mark Laurrie said.
Those acts of sympathy may not seem harmful, but some people are taking offense to the school allowing the memorial. Several people called the Niagara Gazettes newsroom Friday to voice their displeasure.
Is this how our great school district treats all of the citys criminals? said Rachael Douglas, a Falls resident who said shes been robbed at knifepoint before. Im disgusted that the school is allowing him to be turned into some sort of martyr. Theyre putting him on a pedestal for God sakes.
Others criticized the district for flying the American flag at half-staff, even though they havent done so to honor any of the soldiers who have died in Iraq.
Laurrie said Friday afternoon that hes also received calls from angry people regarding the memorial. He pointed out the students have the right to deal with the situation the best they can.
Were not building a monument or a shrine, he said. Despite what the circumstances are, were grieving a childs death.
This reminds me of George Felos giving hourly reports on Terri Schiavo's "beautiful death process."
........and this next quote illustrates the whole point of why Niagra area citizens are "displeased."
"Others criticized the district for flying the American flag at half-staff, even though they havent done so to honor any of the soldiers who have died in Iraq."
Disgusting isn't it. I am glad I am a long, long way from any blue state.
I don't understand the twisted mindset, but there is obvious is pathological aspect to the way libs defend and sympathize with murderers, thieves, rapists, and genocidal dictators, but despise the people who fight to keep them free.
"While police have linked him to gang activity in the past, friends, family and school officials remember a different side of Sheard."
Is it insensitive to get tired of hearing these little tributes to criminals? Every time some creep is arrested/killed, the media insists on reciting such accounts.
And secondly...the thing at the end about "grieving a child's death" is so like a liberal. Teenagers running around robbing, killing, injuring, etc. are called "children", as are our troops in Iraq. (Anybody remember that moment in the debates when Kerry called them "kids"?)
..but there is obvious is pathological aspect to the way libs defend and sympathize with murderers, thieves, rapists, and genocidal dictators, but despise the people who fight to keep them free.
=====
Liberalism is a disease of the mind...only God knows where it came from.
To a liberal, everything is relative. The death of a bad person thus means that any better person who would have been the nth-worst person in the world will now be the (n-1)th-worst person. By contrast, the death of a good person thus means that any worse person who would have been the kth-best person will now be the (k-1)th-best person.
Is flying half-staff for Iraq KIA a custom among other schools? If not, the comparison seems a non sequitur.
How old was he?
Where's the memorial to the Columbine Shooters?
After outraged attacks by parents, the memorials were taken down.
I beleive the flag can only be flown at half staff by order of the President or Governor.
Maybe they do this with the flag for ALL student deaths? And the memorial appears to be student created and not administratively suggested. If the MSM wants to fawn all over this, blame the MSM, not the school.
Our governor orders all flags to half mast everytime a state resident, or person whose unit is based in-state, is KIA.
Federal Flag Code
SEC. 3
(m) The flag, when flown at half-staff, should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day. On Memorial Day the flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon only, then raised to the top of the staff. By order of the President, the flag shall be flown at half-staff upon the death of principal figures of the United States Government and the Governor of a State, territory, or possession, as a mark of respect to their memory. In the event of the death of other officials or foreign dignitaries, the flag is to be displayed at half-staff according to Presidential instructions or orders, or in accordance with recognized customs or practices not inconsistent with law. In the event of the death of a present or former official of the government of any State, territory, or possession of the United States, the Governor of that State, territory, or possession may proclaim that the National flag shall be flown at half-staff. The flag shall be flown at half-staff thirty days from the death of the President or a former President; ten days from the day of death of the Vice President, the Chief Justice or a retired Chief Justice of the United States, or the Speaker of the House of Representatives; from the day of death until interment of an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, a Secretary of an executive or military department, a former Vice President, or the Governor of a State, territory, or possession; and on the day of death and the following day for a Member of Congress. As used in this subsection -
(1) the term 'half-staff' means the position of the flag when it is one-half the distance between the top and bottom of the staff;
(2) the term 'executive or military department' means any agency listed under sections 101 and 102 of title 5, United States Code; and
(3) the term Member of Congress' means a Senator, a Representative, a Delegate, or the Resident Commissioner from Puerto Rico.
Sentimentality again trumps sense in the public schools. When a group publicly mourns the death of a gangster killed in the course of a robbery attempt, they give sanction to his crimes.
16, an earlier post of this story was ~
Teen fatally shot trying to rob man(Niagara Falls: Thug Student Killed by Rob Victim)
Actually, there is a quite a tale to be told there. Immediately after the Columbine shootings, a carpenter, in the neighborhood erected crosses, as a memorial to those who died that day. However, he included crosses for the two shooters, as well as the others who died that day. That angered a whole bunch of people, culminating in one guy tearing down two of the crosses, which prompted the carpenter to then bring them all down to end the controversy.
It can be flown pretty much however you want to. The federal flag code isn't binding.
I guess teen correct here then. I was just wondering if he was an adult.
