Saturday, April 23, 2005 - Cranky schoolchildren, electronic chaos and increased sales of double espressos -- those are just some of the effects that would ripple through Americans' lives under a plan moving through Congress to extend daylight-saving time by two months a year.
Under the plan that was approved by the House of Representatives and sent to the Senate, California and other states would "spring forward" in March rather than April and "fall back" in November rather than October.
"It's gonna be chaos, man," said Viken Fermanian, owner of Salco Services, an electronics repair shop in Granada Hills, predicting there would be no easy fix to the daylight-saving time change hard-wired into everything from wristwatches to VCRs.
While computer software can be reprogrammed to accommodate different dates, hardware presents a trickier problem.
"The worst thing that'll happen is (the device will) change the time for you, but it'll be the wrong time. If Congress changes the date, you'll get every electronics manufacturer scrambling to change their processors," he said.
But supporters of the plan -- tucked into a sweeping federal energy bill approved by the House this week -- note that any drawbacks would be outweighed by the energy savings provided by maximizing daylight hours.
"It's the most painless way to save any energy at all, and it has some other advantages: It reduces crime and traffic accidents," said Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Sherman Oaks.
Sherman and other supporters cite Department of Transportation studies from the mid-1970s that found such a move could save the equivalent of 100,000 barrels of oil each day that daylight-saving time is extended.

Not to mention the humidity! The earth turns according to God's design and plan and no tinkering with clocks can change it.
ping to post 18
uhmmmm, how does that work? There's still the same hours of sunlight. Only your clock has changed. Please correct me if I'm wrong.......
FMCDH(BITS)
Exactly, my electric furnace won't know the difference, nor, my whole house electric air conditioner.
The earth and the sun; Spring, Summer, Fall, & Winter will not change their habits.
Congress can not change these things...
How is this supposed to save energy.....
DST, insanity with a smile. DST, insanity with a smile. DST, insanity with a smile.
Isn't the point of DST to transfer engery cost from business to individuals?
About Daylight Saving Time - History, rationale, laws & dates
Okay, this article has me full of questions.
I grew up in Arizona so I never had any experience with changing clocks until I moved to Florida. What is the rationale for DST?
That said, I like the fact that it doesn't get dark until 8-9 pm in the summer. I love that extra daylight after dinner to take walks, work in the yard, watch the kids play, take a swim, whatever. It kinda sucks for those who have to drive home from work in the dark in the fall and winter.
But, I realize that the sun is going to rise and set at a certain time no matter what our clocks say, so there is really no "extra" time. The day (light) will be shorter in the winter and longer in the summer regardless!
And, as someone else has already pointed out, my air condititioner, etc... is going to run the same length of time. When the sun shines, it's hot. No amount of clock-switching will change that.
I just don't get it!!
Not to mention the humidity! Good idea! They should pass a law to send some of the humidity into the Winter. That way, the Summers wouldn't be so sticky, and I wouldn't get zapped every time I reach for a doorknob in January. Squeeze forward, wring back. |
In central Wisconsin here. Wish DST started a month earlier in the spring. In the winter, ain't nuthin' gonna' help. It's dark when you leave for work, it's dark when you drive home.
Kill daylight saving, it's one of the stupidest ideas our idiotic government ever came up with. Kill it, don't extend it, end the raw stupidity.

Indiana does not participate either. My grandmother used to live there and I could never figure out what time it was. I don't think Hawaii does either.
I think other states should follow Arizona and opt out of DST, stay on standard. Defy the edict! As one of our fellow FReepers said..
I was having a nice walk this afternoon when I spied this headline and there went my blood pressure! There are no words for the inanity!
Riiiight, they want to use a thirty five year old study.
Riiiight.
Sunrise, sunset. Manipulating clocks manipulates the populace. Lose DST and adopt Zulu time. Let the businesses sort out the rest.
Great idea! But... I think suffering is our lot.
I don't know. You sound too smart for public school, that's for sure.
I love when they start talking about it saving energy. How is moving the coldest part of the day from 6AM to 7AM for November and March going to save any energy?
People need to grock, you don't actually get any extra daylight, you just shift it around. If you want more daylight after the end of the work day talk to your boss, don't make the rest of the country change their clocks.
Surely our national government led by 'conservative' Republicans has something better to do than mess with changing the time back and forth. They still do believe in smaller government don't they? And less intrusion into the lives of the citizens of the respective states? Or has that been officially dropped from the party platform?
