Student has all the answersJunior who conquered new SAT 'just has a history of being perfect'

Erin Yu had to look twice as she checked her SAT score online last week.
A perfect score 2400 beamed from the computer screen next to her name.
"I was like, 'Oh, my God!' " said Erin, a 17-year-old junior at Plano Senior High School. "I was in a good mood for the whole day."
Erin was the only student in North Texas to ace the new college entrance exam, one of just seven in the state and 107 in the nation. More than 300,000 students in the country took the expanded test March 12, the first time it was administered by the College Board.
The revamped SAT now includes three sections worth 800 points each. The most notable change is a new writing section that includes a 25-minute essay, said Caren Scoropanos, a spokeswoman for the College Board.
For the essay portion, students must take a stance on an issue and use reasoning skills to back up their thoughts. Erin wrote that the majority should not always rule and cited Galileo and his battles with religious scholars about whether the sun is the center of the solar system.
Erin sailed through the old SAT in 2003 when she earned a perfect 1600. She figured the new test would be tougher.
"I didn't really expect it this time," Erin said.
College Board officials would not release details on the overall performance of students who took the test on the first outing, saying it is too early for comparisons to previous years because students still have several opportunities .....

Wow. Amazing!
SMILEY N. POOL/DMNErin Yu (second from left)
waits for a bus for a Plano
Senior High band trip. She calls
herself a band nerd; she's also
the only North Texan to score a
perfect 2400 on the new SAT.
I was raised up in Plano schools.
The Asians really took advantage of the top of the line, best of the nation public schools.
Ummm.... Erin Yu? Nevermind.
Belly girl with a brain. How does she do it? :)
And I thought my sister's 1600 was great in '68.
;-)
Cute too.
After posting this, I noticed they had linked a better pic:

haha! Worth repeating. :)
What was amazing to me was that she scored a SAT
perfecto the year before as well!
My wife and SIL are Asian, also from Northern China. My SIL came to Texas in 1996 and applied for her son to come over and he arrived in 1997. He had finished Chinese school, equivalent to HS. When they put him in HS here (Richardson ISD), they put him in his Junior year and he knew zero English. He had to learn the language while taking his classes. He graduated in 1999 in the top 10% of his class. He was accepted at UT Dallas and finished his BS in Computer Science Engineering in 4 years. He's now working on his Masters in San Antonio.
Just amazing.
Kids take SATS all the time these days for show prep. You can start at age 12-13. Bad scores can be expunged. Company in charge of SATS is rolling in the dough.
Way to go Sis! :)
Your sister's 1600 was great in 1968. The test and the scoring totals have been changed since then.
Good for her.
I've been a little concerned about the essay portion of the test ... but I see she got around the bias by stating that the "majority doesn't always rule"
Babs Boxer, Biden, Chuckie Schumer, and NEA must be really proud.
Incidentally, I've always been mystified as to why those of oriental descent are never really considered minorities.
Wow. Thank yourself, your parents and your teachers, little lady.
The SAT test was "re-centered" some years ago. The median was adjusted downward, so most student's scores from the 1960s would be a lot higher today.
I'm not surprised that she's Asian. On the internatonal Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) tests, the top performing countries are mostly all Asian. (The US has finally pulled ahead of Bulgaria!)
One result of being raised to appreciate the wisdom of Confucius and not the wisdom of Eminem, I guess.
The new writing test is creating quite a problem.
They haven't revised the scoring standards at many colleges, the SAT won't revise the percentiles until 2006 to include the new writing section scores.
But if you get a 2400, I guess you don't have to guess what percentile you're in, LOL.
Bump for public schools. They aren't all bad nor are all the students.
Now, off to the re-edumacashun camp with you...
In '68, 1600 meant a perfect test, now it means a perfect score. Still an outstanding achievement, a perfect score test can now have a few errors. ....just another form of grade inflation...
