Pentagon official: China not a future challenge but 'a problem here and now'
A senior Pentagon official told Congress last week that China's military power is growing. "We have watched as China's armed forces have progressed rapidly," said Peter Rodman, assistant defense secretary for international security affairs.
|
Rodman noted that the threat from China is not only a future challenge but "a problem here and now."Double-digit percentage rate increases in military spending for the past 15 have sped up China's military buildup, Rodman told a joint hearing of the House International Relations and Armed Services Committees.
"The PLA is no longer a Third World military force," he said. "In certain areas it is becoming a First World military force - in areas such as ballistic and cruise missiles, advanced fighters and multi-role aircraft, advanced submarines with anti-ship cruise missiles. It is now a force that is gradually tipping the balance of regional military power and posing a greater danger to U.S. military forces in a potential conflict."

"The Horses Mouth?"
Yeah?
Thanks
I have no idea what "The Horses Mouth" refers to.
Then you didn't read his tag line.
Or click on any of the links ;-)
Normally I post a direct link displaying as "The Horses Mouth", but I guess I overlooked it this time thinking that people would click on the "read more" in the excerpt.
In certain areas? Heck that's about ALL the areas!
Thanks for the hint. I'm not in the habit of reading taglines.
Thanks. Sorry for bugging you.
not a problem.
I usually post articles with a direct link.
It was an oversight on my part.

Don't blame it all on the stainmaster. There are many free traitors on this site that have no problem with us sending hi-tech factories to china.
Read the Cox report. This was bipartisan.
Clinton was years ago. What's Saint W's excuse for supporting the build-up China's economy (which is the true measure of a country's strength)?
Very True. Its funny but the Repubs once believed this: 1980's Communism bad (Evil Empire) now its good for business.
I have seen argument that Russia's brand of tyranny was expansionist, while China doesn't want to expand their dictatorship beyond, say, East Asia. As if that was any better. There are free nations in East Asia with whom we have treaties, leading us to either war or retreat.
Anyway, blaming our present problems on Clinton/Democrats/Unions/all the other B.S. excuses here on FR are just exercises in flight from cognitive dissonance. Fact is, the Republican Party has charge of every branch of the Federal government, and things just keep getting worse. And the worse they get, the closer the Witch Queen gets to the White House in 2008.
gosh, how did this happen?
did american and european corporations and consumers build up the chinese economy?
Poohbah and all his Free Trade brethren who attempted to "spin" Free Republic....into blind Panda-hugging complacency....
were WRONG. WRONG. WRONG.
Can we say it enough?
No we cannot.
They were WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!
Their purported defense credentials appear to be rather questionable now, eh?
China is promoting Germany's entry into the UN security council. It's long supported revolutin in Africa. China has been in talks with Venezuela recently, and has a naval and corporate presence in Latin America. I wouldn't characterize it as having ambitions limited to east Asia.
Not to mention building ports in latin america. (Mexico, too, I believe)
Clinton was years ago, that's how it always is. The effects of an administration's policies or lack of policies, negative or positive are seldom immediate, we will be realizing the consequences of Clinton for years.
