Sex Offender Kills Self Over Neighborhood Signs

OCALA, Fla. — A convicted sex offender apparently committed suicide in despair over signs posted in his neighborhood calling him a child rapist.

Clovis Claxton (search), 38, was found dead by his father with one of the signs beside his body. It was less than a day after his release from a psychiatric hospital.

His mother blames Marion County (search) Commissioner Randy Harris (search) for her son's death. Harris proposed putting up flyers in the neighborhoods of sex offenders to alert neighbors.

I would hope no one here would be involved in such a thing. I'm not sure I know the answer. I would agree with you that in almost every instance, you do the crime, you do the time, and that's it. But with this particular crime, the recidivism rate is so high, and the consequences so dreadful, that it's not obviously wrong to think that there might be some consequence besides incarceration. Again, not sure what that is.

Some of you might be joking about this, but here's the truth. Finally we see a pedophile with actual SHAME about what he has done. I too am glad he has left the earth and won't harm any more kids, but what worries me are all the pedophiles like Jackson who think they are not doing wrong, have no shame, and cost the taxpayers millions to even try and stop them.

Due to the nature of the crime, that is an exceeding complicated question.

I have always been of the mind that once one has served his time, he has paid the price exacted by society. That is such a set-in-stone attitude of mine that even sex offender notification laws make me a little queasy. How often must one pay for one crime?

Yet, the recidivism rate for such offenders is unusually high, and their victims are the weakest and most vulnerable in society.

I don't have the answers.

This case, and everything about it, is evidence of one thing! The need for stiffer sentencing in child molestation and child killing cases! The old adage "little life, little time" is wrong!!!! The children are our most treasured legacies, no parent should have to bury a child, the children will never be right after these pedophiles rape them, and they are the most vulnerable in our society. They MUST be protected. It starts with the sentencing.

Serving a legal punishment does not preclude the exacting of natural or social punishment. If he was "brain injured" and a pedophile, then I think natural selection has played out as God intended.

Don't you know that if AP thought it was a "mild" crime, they would have mentioned it? This story was written to make you feel sorry for the sex offender -- I mean, victim, and if the crime wouldn't fit in with that agenda, it would not be mentioned.

Such a move will be made on the drug guys, as soon as both governments find a way to survive or even thrive without all the benefits they derive from the drug traffickers.

I am talking legal jobs, like those in the DEA, local police forces, prison systems,hospitals, rehabilitation centers,, the coast Guard, the Border patrol, etc., etc. Can anyone comprehend the number of lawfully employed who would be immediately unemployed as result of a victory in the drug war?? Not even counting the street punks and their families who would move back on welfare, if their careers as dope pushers was suddenly eliminated.
