Further, I can't imagine a middle-schooler sending a shot out 80 feet. It ain't happening.
Obviously the pierced lad is not a Slayer.
Just a flesh wound.
I signed up my ex-wife for olympic javelin catch. (I'll never understand why that woman divorced me)
>>I don't think it is possible to throw an 8 lb. shot like a baseball. I tried it once and nearly dislocated my shoulder.
It's not. I used to toss 12 LB shot in high school, and we used to pick up the women's 8LB shots. Even though they were lighter, you still couldn't toss it like a baseball.
And no way could a kid toss it 80ft. If he could, he'd be Olympic champion by now.
down here in florida it has been thrown over 200 by high schoolers
Agree. Javelin is pretty much gone from high school. I don't know if any states still have it in their championships. Too dangerous with all the kids running around. People did used to get hit with them. That's why they're gone.
A shot put? No way. High School record is like 81 feet.
"Carter won the men's shot put with a heave of 24.77 meters/81 feet 3.50 inches, which added more than 10 feet to the previous national prep record. No athlete since has come within five feet of Carter's mark, which still stands as the best ever."USOC source
A Javelin, yes--a teammate of mine tossed it 215 in high school.
oops, my mistake it was a discus... I should have recalled a conversation i had better :-(
This article has given me an idea for a new sport that combines Javelin throwing and Track...
Wow, discus over 200 feet? That is a serious toss. I think the best I saw in person was around 180 feet.
I remember working the discus measuring tape was always more dangerous than the javelin at track meets--with javelin, it usually stuck in the ground so you could be pretty far away from the line of fire, but discus you had to be sort of close to accurately see where it landed. Plus the sector lines were wider in discus compared to javelin.
Shot put wasn't much of a big deal because they came in slower, but those discus guys could really get some speed. We always wanted to do the hammer toss, but I guess that was not allowed at our high school (too dangerous).
Hmm with some of the middle distance runners on my team (who all seemed to be jerks) that might have been kinda fun.
We had an assistant coach for West Chester University in Pa hit by a student practicing the hammer throw. This was last week. The fencing was not adequate. The coach was airlifted to Univ of Penn with serious injuries. It caved in her face.
She has a trach and is improving slowly.
I imagine a wetback reading this and tinking " what de hail....impaled by a wild peeeeg?"
Throwing a javelin is child's play. Throwing a javelina, now that's a sport!!
Impaled? The poor woman got cut right off at the waist!
Fixed it.
