The Election of Ratzinger was predictable. The world was not quite ready for a African or Asian Pope and also this was the last gasp of the Europeans, primarily the Italians, to hold on the power in the Church.
What was really needed was a younger Italian or European Pope who might have had foresight and vision to reinvigorate the Church on the Continent of Europe and strengthen the Church.
What we have here is at best a stop-gap Pope who may last long enough to prepare for the direction the Church hopes to go in for many years to come.
The next Pope will definitely be from Africa or Asia.
Ratzinger at best is a caretaker Pope and will not be able address the many concerns and problems the Church has at this point in time.

If he wants to stay that way he'll leave the Calvi-Banco Ambrosiano-Archbishop Marcinkus affair alone...

Apropos of nazi canards yet to come, if anyone's interested I can recommend a book called "A Child of Hitler" by Alfons Heck. He was a Hitler Youth as a young boy but very soon caught on. He remained in Germany and survived nazism. The humanity of this man is inspiring, and he offers insight and seeks forgiveness while trying to explain how such a thing can happen in the hopes of preventing another such era. I didn't expect to enjoy the book but I did tremendously. Looking back at events is a much different lens than that of contemporary pressures.

While I was really pulling for ya, Laz, Ratzinger may not be that bad a choice. His military background would come in quite handy if he decides to crank up the Crusades.I would have restarted the Crusades TODAY.

I appreciate that Benedict is conservative, and I pray that he is the best thing for our church.
I do know that I did not come back to the church until AFTER I was married, so I could avoid all the sexuality teachings. I wonder how many of us here broke any of the church's teachings in the past and are now condemning those who do the same.

You must have a different Bible than I do. Exekiel???? revelations????
Take the time to spell these things correctly, and someone might listen. Misspell the titles of the very documents you reference makes you look a little silly, don't you think?
To: Dr.Deth
Ok, Malacy said there'd be 111 more popes. The Benedictines added another so it would bring true St. Benedictine's prophesy their order would fight the end battle. So, Benedict XVI could fulfill both being "glory of the olives" (of the Benedictine order) as well as Malacy's 111th and last pope. Wasn't there something about 2012 being the end of the world? Wasn't the battle supposed to last 7 years... 2005 + 7 = 2012. YIKES!!!

Just got out of a meeting so I missed the initial announcement.
Pope JP II brought freedom through Catholism to the benighted Atheist Eastern Bloc.
Hopefully, Pope Benedict XVI will likewise bring freedom through Catholicism to the increasingly benighted and increasingly Atheist Western European Bloc.
