Why do they choose such old Pope's? His health will become an issue before too long then they'll have to go through the process again

The Holy Spirit chooses the Pope. All the cardinals have to do is listen.

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany addresses the faithful as the new pope in this frame from TV, at the Vatican, Tuesday, April 19 2005. Bells chimed at St. Peter's Basilica Tuesday evening, announcing to the world that a new pope was elected in the first papal conclave of the new millennium. The pope will be known as Benedict XVI . No it doesn't. You should check out the slime they're posting at the DUmpster. So far I've seen three mentions to our new Pope being a Nazi and a nice picture comparing him to Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars. What a hoard of vile critters they are. I almost feel sorry for them...almost.

"Well, again, if the prophecies are true, the new Pope will be not Hispanic but from the "old France" (german?, austrian?); after about 8 months, the Pope will have to run away from Rome, and he will be moving towards Germany - Austria (returning to his country?). "

Utter nonsense! I have just killed a chicken and examined its entrails. The truth is that this pope will live to be 106 years of age and will be folowed by Pope Fantasy I. Chicken guts do not lie. People lie.

indeed - I am delighted to know how much this will cause the libs to flip out. I'm heading over to DU in a few minutes to indulge in some schadenfreude :)

Schadenfreude! What an appropriate word!

"I think Benedict is a bit further down the path than Saul was."

I don't know about that; I understand Saul/Paul to have been pretty good at his job. More akin to an SS general than this Hitler youth.

But it is a wart, yes.

BUT we won't have a wartless unifying leader of all the entire --- not merely the Roman Catholic --- Christian Church until JC comes back.

Fear not. Cardinal Ratzinger's family opposed Hitler.

They just gave George Stephanopoulos air time on ABC to slam the new Pope. Good grief! What a dork.

Cokie Roberts sounded like a sourpuss. The liberal spin has started. The NYT no doubt will run the Pius XII slanders again.

I'm sick to death of posters like that on FR who have absolutely NO sense of civility and can't resist raining on other people's parades.

I am filled with joy today and I'll be damned if I'm going to let somebody ruin it for Catholics!

George, Charlie, and Cokie are saying this is "very controversial"

The pope is Catholic.

How can THAT be controversial?

He was drafted and served a little over a year (I think), both in an anti-aircraft battery and in some sort of construction capacity. He went AWOL in 1945 and was captured by U.S. forces.

So, while he was a German soldier, it certainly wasn't by choice.

LOL. Cardinal Daneels and 'progressives' like him must be chokingly purple and green with envy. What will the women priest crowd do now? And the whole amchurch crowd. Darn. I guess EWTN did the right thing encouraging so many of us to pray during the conclave.
