Well, with respect, "Vigilantes" is precisely correct. Committees of Vigilance. What else would you call it?
Furthermore, these Committees of Vigilance have always formed when a government has failed in the function of enforcing specific laws. I'm hardly a "close the borders" enthusiast, but that does appear to be the case here, and it is that, and not any loose application of terminology, that ought to concern the Bush administration.

Gee Dubya, and a bunch of Freepers for that matter, are DEAD WRONG on this issue.
I am afraid it will take another terrorist attack, one clearly through our southern border, to make them see the light.

The politicians need to fine, permanently deny citizenship, and put on probation the illegals or ship them out. Great article except for the highlighted portion (I haven't figured out how to draw a line through items yet)which needs to be removed. IMHO

I agree about a x-border terrorist attack. I am very urinated at the president now on illegal immigration, but it will be as to nothing compared to how I would feel if a terrorist incident occurs due to his border security neglect.

OK, I just don't understand. I was expecting President Bush to support measures to protect us from terrorists. It seems like a no-brainer that we would want to prevent illegal aliens from entering the United States from Mexico. I'm not afraid of Mexicans seeking U.S. citizenship--I'm afraid of terrorists who will pretend to be Mexicans seeking U.S. citizenship. How can we distinguish one from the other if we don't have control of our borders?
I just don't understand President Bush's apparent nonchalance in this situation. He is from Texas. Isn't there a strong awareness of the problem and concern about it in Texas? Why does he appear to be so distanced from this issue?

calling a couple of hundred middle-aged citizens vigilantes. That's just because they are a handful of people. If there were more, many more, they would be the reason for some urgent action on the part of Gov't to crack down on this kind of immigration.

GWB's legacy... some 1,400 of my American brothers killed in Iraq, "protecting" the US, while 14,000 illegals run daily across the US border. Not one dollar of mine will reach the Republicans again.

Uh, sorry ... those aren't the sort of Volunteers we're looking for where the Army of One (World) is concerned.
I'm surprised he didn't call them insurgents. That's what they are, after all.

This is a very comprehensive article. The author covers all the bases on this issue. However, lots of Americans (and I have said this before) find this an emotionally charged issue. Many of us are third or fourth generation American as it is. Our families came here and were made to prove that they were not criminals, were not infirm, and had a home and job were waiting for them. Otherwise, they were sent back. Descendants of these immigrants feel badly demanding a curtailment of immigration to this country. However, if the government would just enforce the same rigorous and fair standards for all immigrants as they did for our grandparents, maybe the looming civil strife in the US over this will be averted. I do see continued and vicious civil discord over immigration which will rival or perhaps surpass the kind of events and animosity which Americans endured during the Civil Rights confrontations in the 1960's and which unscrupulous politicians in this country continue to cultivate and to perpetuate by any means in order to garner votes among minorities and.p>

Their cause, their concern, their caring for America and it's sovereignty are gaining steam. I hope the President has a change of mind, quick. Sounds like our northern border will be next to be guarded by volunteers.
I heard a woman call into Hannity suggesting that the President sign an Executive Order establishing the Civil Border Patrol, similar to the formation of the Civil Air Patrol in the 40's. It's a thought.

We here on the border in Cochise County, AZ invite President Bush come down and instead of clearing logs of his Crawford, TX ranch, he can help us clear the tons of illegal alien garbage out of our desert and mountain areas. We want him to expend the same effort he's pictured expending above to haul bags of illegal alien garbage down from the hiking trails and environmentally sensitive areas. We've even got a few "Cochise County UDA" bags with his name written on it, reserved for him just for this purpose. So, how about it President Bush, are you coming down or what?

If a sixty-thousand soldier Mexican Army crossed our border, its a military invasion and act of war. Arent more than six million unarmed Mexicans illegally entering our country an immigrant invasion? U.S. Constitution Article 1 Section 8 Clause 15:
"The Congress shall have Power to provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections
and repel Invasions;"
U.S. Constitution Article 4 Section 4:"The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government,
and shall protect each of them against Invasion;"

All politics are local it's said. Start by getting people elected to change local rules to deal with local ILLEGAL immigrant problems.
Then statewide.
Then, "Look out, mainline Washington Republicrats!"
