A Montgomery man fights back against a would-be robber... and wins.
Police say a deacon from Mount Olive Bapist went to the Normandale Compass Bank to deposit the church's offerings when a man approached him. The man then allegedly knocked the deacon down, took the money and started running away.
The suspect, however, was in for a surprise. The deacon was carrying more than a money bag to the bank... he was carrying a loaded gun. He began firing at the suspect, who slipped, fell to the ground and dropped the cash. When the robber went to retrieve the bag, the deacon threatened to shoot him if he touched it.
The suspect ran away. If you have any information that could help police identify and catch him, you're asked to call Crimestoppers at 215-STOP. You can remain anoynmous and you may be eligible for a cash reward.
Police recommend in a situation like this when you have to carry a lot of cash to the bank that you always bring another person along with you.
Defensive Use of Firearms Pinglist
If you want on/off this list, Freepmail me.
Preferably someone who is armed and for sure an excellent shot! OTOH, it helps to be walkin' with the Lord!
Yeah, I think this Deacon had all the backup he needed.
Good guy - 1. Bad guy - 0.
The Deacon's lucky he didn't end up in jail.
Most states allow you to defend yourself against crime ONLY if you feel that you are in danger for your life.
Once the theif ran away the Deacon was not in danger, and thus was no longer shooting in self defense.
It's unfortunate that the law is written that way...
The Deacon would be in jail if he did this in my town. Can't shoot at someone who poses no threat to you, as a fleeing robber does not.
Exactly. And in some (most?) places, once he grabbed the bag and started running off, that is the end of that particular incident. Once the deacon opened fire it opened up the door for incident #2 that would be one in which the thief returns fire and kills him in self-defense. I kid you not. It has happened and was recorded just that way (incident #1 in which the attacker withdrew and incident #2 in which the aggressor (prior victim) was killed in self defense.) Seriously.
That's why you've got to be real careful and understand what you're getting into over a money bag that probably doesn't have $1,000 in it. Even if you are never criminally charged and never see a day in jail - it's likely that your life will fundamentally change from that day on.
Bigger caliber Deacon.
Move.
Taxman recommends that you spend more quality time at the range, so when you have to pop a cap on a lowlife scumbag, you hit him in the 10 ring!
Makes my day!
Going to Normandale with a gun is always a good idea. Going with several other people with guns would be better.
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition !!
Yee ha! Deacon Dead Eye!! ;)
I think Texas allows you to shoot a robber running off with your property. Maybe Alabama is the same way.
A man's life over money?
"Police recommend in a situation like this when you have to carry a lot of cash to the bank that you always bring another person along with you."
Yes, indeedy....one to carry the gun...
I'm glad this had a happy ending. It seems to me like there would be a lot of people in the area of a bank that could have been in the line of fire. Fortunately, the deacon won this round.
Yes. That man's life was devoted to lawlessness, and he proved that he was willing to injure another person in the pursuit of his base, criminal aims.
The best thing for society would be to remove such offal from the gene pool the INSTANT they cross the line.
