The headline is indeed outrageous.

And the article contains several blatant inaccuracies to boot.

For goodness sake! If you're going to post such a thing, post the damn headline! Talk about burying the lead. Sheesh.

"Cardinal lock-up for papal election rooted in scandal".

The headline in question. I agree, it is in bad taste. Typical, though.

Kofi 'my son stole $millions right under my nose from Saddam's food-for-oil scam' Annan and Jimmah 'I faced the killer rabbit and escaped with my life' Carter will be entering a protest that the Cardinals have disallowed UN oversight for possible voting irregularities.

"Cardinal lock-up for papal election rooted in scandal".

The scandal here is the AP judging the past by today's standard in an effort to discredit the Catholic Church and Christianity.

Devious, but attention grabbing!

The text certainly promotes research and discussion. All worthwile, for those of us who are otherwise uninformed.

Agencie Press Francaise is, in general, gratuitously insulting. It is, after all, French.

I met one of their reporters at the Inauguration in January. He either was clueless, or he was dishonest, in claiming to be unaware of the close friend and aid to Chirac who was caught up in the Oil for Food program.

The French are like a "genteel" family in the South who have lost all of their money and most of their prestige. They wind up trading on their name, for whatever it is worth (which is not much). Sounds very French, doesn't it?

Th headline is Conclave Rules Rootes in Scandal.

No scandal at all: The conclave is a response to the Cardinals taking to long to agree on a Pope.

The first conclave -- literally "with key" -- arose out of utter frustration over two years and nine scandalous months of dilly-dallying in the late 13th century by cardinals unable or unwilling to reach consensus because of political pressures.

The decision was taken to confine the cardinals to the papal palace at Viterbo, Italy, where Pope Clement IV had died on November 29, 1268.

When they still could not decide on a pope, protesters tore off the roof, leaving the cardinals exposed to the weather. As the conclave continued to drag on, the cardinals were fed only bread and water, before they finally reached agreement on September 1, 1271.

I'm not Catholic, and was unaware of the history of the conclave. However, I find it no less scandalous than the origin of deacons

Acts 6:1

In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food.

So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables.

Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them 4and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.”

The issue came about that the men of the church weren't being servants to their weaker brothers and sisters. It wasn't until an official title was created that the church began serving its own. However, this immediately became a position of respect, and deservedly so. I imagine the origin of this conclave and the subsequent honor surrounding it is analogous.

Wow. Thanks for that intelligent analysis.

i'd never thought of it in that way.

ABC radio news keeps calling Ratzinger "The Enforcer". Then they interviewed a CINO from Maine, who wants the Church to be more open to the rights of women, reproductive "rights" and the will of the people.

I've stopped getting upset about Media bias years ago. Their influence continues to decline.

It's pathetic that the Godless who don't have a clue how the Church works would come up with such a headline. it shows just how slameless these people are.

One voting cycle, The first vote of a possible many to come, and it's now a "scandel"?

The only "scandel" I see is the media, who have shown repeatedly over the past few years just how corrupt and
evil they can be in their attempts to control what people in this world should see and think.

I don't care how the conclave started, but it's way preferable to a two year campaign season, with a handful of states choosing a party nominee to be named at an utterly useless convention, then a ridiculous series of debates that aren't really debates. I think Americans could learn something from this conclave business, something about brevity.
