PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: The President and First Lady are spending the weekend at Camp David, and there are no planned public appearances. President and Mrs. Bush reported total income last year of $784,219 and paid $207,307 in federal income taxes, according to documents released by the White House on April 15, 2005. Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife Lynne reported $1.3 million in taxable income, the White House said.
THE WEEK AHEAD:
Monday, the President will go to Columbia, South Carolina, where he'll make remarks on strengthening Social Security.
Tuesday, the President will go to Springfield, Illinois, where he will tour the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, and then make remarks at the dedication of the library and museum. Also on Tuesday, the Vice President will deliver the keynote address at the Oklahoma City National Memorial ceremony to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building there.
Wednesday, the President makes remarks to the 2005 National and State Teachers of the Year in the Rose Garden. And then he'll make remarks at the U.S.-Hispanic Chambers of Commerce Legislative Conference. Those remarks will be on energy, as I mentioned. The President will then present the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy to the United States Naval Academy football team in the East Room.
Thursday, GWB will make remarks on strengthening Social Security to the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America in Washington. He'll also make remarks at the President's Environmental Youth Awards in the East Garden.
Friday, the President will participate in a service project. And then he'll make remarks on Earth Day. And both those events are in Townsend, Tennessee. Then he goes on to the ranch in Crawford, where he'll remain for the weekend.
THE FOLLOWING WEEK: On Monday the 25th, the President will meet with Crown Prince Abdullah of Saudi Arabia at the ranch. And then on Tuesday, he will go to Galveston to participate in a roundtable on strengthening Social Security. This event had been postponed because of the Pope's funeral.
QUOTE OF THE DAY: From the Presidential Radio Address, 4/16/05:
American families and small businesses across the country are feeling the pinch from rising gas prices. If you're trying to meet a family budget or a payroll, even a small change at the pump can have a big impact.
America's prosperity depends on reliable, affordable and secure sources of energy. And today our energy needs are growing faster than our domestic sources are able to provide. Demand for electricity has grown more than 17 percent in the past decade, while our transmission ability lags behind. And we continue to import more than one-half of our domestic oil supply.
Every source of power that we use today started with the power of human invention, and those sources have served us well for decades. Now it's time to apply our knowledge and technology to keep the American Dream alive in this new century. There is nothing America cannot achieve when we put our mind to it. And I urge Congress to work out its differences and pass an energy bill that will help make America safer and more prosperous for the years to come.
Snugs, that photo of Spotty is gorgeous. You have a knack for finding wonderful photos the rest of us miss. That photo of her is a keeper for sure.
Yes, that's for sure. As the only presidential pet to be born in the WH under one president, leave, and then return with another president, she is definitely going to be part of WH lore forever. Well deserved, too. She was so devoted to GWB -- and he to her -- that their relationship even touched foreign leaders who visited in the years before her death.
Hopefully, as their time in office draws to a close, the VP will come to realize he has a duty to history to at least leave a record of 9/11 and it's immediate aftermath. You and I both know he is a reserved and very private man. Nevertheless, he and GWB already belong to history. I would like the historical record to include their own first-hand accounts rather than just 2nd hand accounts from other sources.
You've made a very compelling case for Dick Cheney writing his memoirs, Wolfstar. As you say, if for nothing else than the events of 9/11 from his viewpoint, it would be worth it. But he has many other compelling stories and perspectives that would be of interest in American history, I've no doubt of that.
I think Rumsfeld's autobiography would be pretty interesting, too. Hope he writes one.
Whether or not they just do memoirs of the period, or full autobiographies, I think GWB, Dick Cheney, and Don Rumsfeld owe it to history to write something about the 9/11 period and its aftermath. I would include Colin Powell, but he's already done a book. I would also like to see a book from John Ashcroft. The other principal at the time was George Tenet, but I don't trust him to tell the truth.
I was disappointed in Ari Fleisher's book, because he focused on his relationship with the WH press corps. With all due respect to Ari, there were far more important things going on during his time in the WH than his daily exchanges with the press corps.
Those models of Willy, Spot and Barney are darling. The WH staff and volunteers do such a great job every year decorating for the holidays.
Ultimately, I think Condoleeza Rice should and will write an autobiography. It's too soon now, the most compelling part of her history may be yet to be written! (I hope, I hope, I hope).
Dr. Rice was not at the center of 9/11 though. Dick Cheney's position on that incredible and awful day is unique. As you say, he needs to write at the least a very detailed memoir of that day in the White House, and perhaps the few days immediately following.
He's a modest man, but he was at the center of the world on that day and performed magnificently. As you say, the world deserves to know exactly what went through his mind, what he did and what he thought about it on reflection.

Eleanor, what are the details on that photo (i.e. when and where was it taken, and under what circumstances?). It looks like the window of a plane. Was he coming back to the White House by plane on Sept 12? If so, that implies that he was taken out of the DC area on Sept 11, perhaps after GWB arrived back?
See you later got a few chores to do hope to catch you on tonight's dose later.
Beware of Barney. LOL!
Well he did have a reputation for snapping peoples heels when he younger LOL
thank you for your patience!
