Emotions Flare At War Protests On Campus

MADISON, Wis. -- University of Wisconsin campus police spent the day Thursday dealing with some students who walked out of classes to protest the Iraq war, military recruiters on campus and the ROTC program.

Jane Jensen of Military Families for Peace began her speech at the rally by saying she supports the troops, but that no more should be sent to war.

"We support the troops by doing all we can do for the soldiers who are there now and their families," Jensen said.

Then in the middle of her speech there was a loud "booooo!"

Police said the protestors were using amplified sound without a permit. But they told demonstrators, as long as no complaints surfaced, they could continue to speak.

"We got several complaints, asked them to shut down, and they didn't want to," said Capt. Brian Bridges of UW Police.

Protesters said, "This is not a police state. We have the right to demonstrate."

But despite their voice being taken away, they had a backup plan and continued to protest.

"We're gonna oppose this war because it's been forced down our throats," another speaker told the crowd.

Jensen said she felt humiliated.

"I came to speak representing military families, to talk about supporting the troops," she said.

Protestors continued to march for the rest of the afternoon, saying military recruiters should be taken off campus because students are sacrificing their lives for an education.

UW Chancellor John Wiley said it's a matter of rights.

"Even if it weren't for the fact that it's illegal for us to kick (the recruiters) off, we wouldn't do it anyway," Wiley said. "That would infringe on the right of students who want to speak with recruiters."

I know Jane Jensen. She worked with me during Operation Desert Storm as one of my key military family liaison volunteers. She's a well spoken person who sincerely does support the troops. I know she had a son in ODS, and that's how we met; she may have a son in Gulf War II, as well.

UW Madison students can be some of the biggest socialist @ssholes on the planet.

How does being a lazy slack-d*ck who cuts class equate to a statement against war?

No kidding. I skipped many a class in my days... but mostly in the name of beer.

Actually when I skipped it was usually to try and win the hand of a fair maiden or some such.

Jane's heart is in the right place, but she and I differ on allowing recruiters on campus. Amazingly, the UW allows it and doesn't run them off. She's against them being there.

Her son is a Blackhawk Helicopter pilot. I think she's tried to make the best of being thrust into being a Military Mom against her Socialist nature.

I always got along OK with her, politics aside. This "demonstration" yesterday puts a human face on it for me. Wisconsin has a huge military population; it's a large part of our economy. (I'm retired Army.)

See, you 2 get it.

There are very good reasons for skipping class: hangovers, hunger, cavorting with the opposite sex, all quite valid.

But trying to say that skipping class sends an anti-war message is just stupid.

I was never anti war, I was anti draft, thats why I volunteered in 69.

I believe you either use volunteers or everybody, no in between.

It is not support for the troops when you undermine the success of their mission. I don't care how sincere she may be, she's not being supportive. Supportive would be ensuring they get everything they need to be successful, then bringing them home.

Thanks for your service.

I agree with you - our men and women in uniform today have proven the superiority of the all-volunteer-force over the conscript idea in most scenarios.

Is education an end to the exclusion of all others?

"Supportive would be ensuring they get everything they need to be successful, then bringing them home."

She's one of the most dedicated Military Moms that I know of. I don't agree with her message 100%, but many of our military families around here rely on her to navigate the confusing world of the military. She's a "useful idiot" at the very least. ;)

I'm sure she's a nice lady. But it is impossible to "support" troops by telling them you oppose the cause they fight for.

Would she have told the Guadalcanal Marines that she sure "supports" them, even though "Mr. Roosevelt's War" never should have been fought and was just about big business, oil and steel, so we might as well give the Canal back???

Jane's heart is in the right place

Sorry she may have a history of supporting our troops but now her heart is in the wrong place. If you happen to look around you and see a large group of socialist agreeing with your speech, your heart is in the wrong place. The recruiters have a right to be on campus. Your friend is speaking for obstruction of rights.

I don't need a face for all of this. I raised several of those faces involved. I'm sure you would like to put politics aside but your friend hasn't. She doesn't speak for me and how dare her try to say that she does.

It is not support for the troops when you undermine the success of their mission.

Similar to a person saying “I support the Dallas Cowboys, but I’m against football”.
Much like the protesters of the Viet Nam era, they are giving a message to the enemy: Just stick it out long enough and you will win because we will force an end to the war.

glad my wife & I live on the west side - we no longer have to run the 'isthmus gauntlet' of maggot-infested, dope-smoking, pinko-hippie types that are crawling around the state street area ready to spring out into traffic!
