The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

We now know more about an alleged attack that triggered an increased national threat level last summer.

That's when U.S. officials said they had uncovered a plot targeting financial institutions. The plot involved bombs, banks and British nationals.

The detail was startling, the targets enormous. They included financial buildings in Washington, New York and New Jersey.

IRAQI TIP TAKES DOWN TERRORISTS SUSPECTED OF HELO ATTACK

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- An Iraqi civilian helped Task Force Baghdad Soldiers find and apprehend six terrorists suspected of shooting down a civilian MI-8 helicopter April 21.

The Iraqi citizen told the Soldiers he knew where the blue KIA pickup truck the terrorists used during the attack was parked and led them to the site. When the Soldiers got there, several other local residents confirmed the first tip and showed the Soldiers where the terrorists lived.

Soldiers started to search two houses at 12:30 a.m. April 23. At the first house they captured three men and confiscated bomb-making material.

At the second house, the unit detained three more suspects involved in making improvised explosive devices.

All six men were taken into custody for questioning.

Afghan Security Forces Seize Heroin Shipment

HERAT, Afghanistan – The Transitional Afghan Border Security Forces along with a small contingent of Coalition forces seized 479 kilograms of heroin along the northwestern border April 17.

The bust also netted seven Afghans suspected of smuggling operations. The suspects are being held by Afghan forces.

The border crossing is known as a hot spot for smuggling operations in the western region. It’s estimated the Afghan government loses $300 million a year in taxable good through its borders.

The Transitional Afghan Border Security Forces was assembled in Kabul two weeks ago and is made up of 229 border police volunteers from throughout the country. Its mission is to conduct operations at the Islam Qalah border checkpoint and 13 adjoining border points in order to secure the border, control illicit trade and interdict narco-trafficking. The primary goal is to set the conditions for corruption-free immigration, customs revenue control and collections.

“This is counter-narcotics at its best. The entire operation was planned, led and executed by the Afghans,” said U.S. Army Maj. Anthony W. Oliver, liaison officer for the mission. “All we supplied was coaching, mentoring and some logistics.”

The street value of the seized heroin is estimated at $2 million.

TASK FORCE CLASHES WITH INSURGENTS NEAR SALERNO

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – More than a dozen insurgents were killed late Tuesday night as Coalition helicopters, aircraft and artillery responded to a rocket attack at Forward Operating Base Salerno.

“It was a combined-arms effort,” said U.S. Army Maj. J.R. Mendoza, Task Force Thunder’s brigade fire support officer. “We were able to see the launching point of the rockets and we brought everything we had to bear on it.”

Mendoza explained that the base was postured to respond to just such an attack.

“They shot at us with rockets and we were responded with artillery, fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft,” Mendoza said.

U.S. Air Force A-10s and an AC-130H expended two 500-pound bombs, 10 rockets, 565 30mm rounds, 8 105mm rounds and seven 40mm rounds.

“These rocket attacks are, by their nature, indiscriminate. They attack not only our forces but innocent civilians as well. This seems to be the norm with insurgent rocket attacks,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Robert Cornejo, Combined Joint Task Force-76’s fires chief. “Our fires, by contrast, are precision-oriented fires and are only launched after precautions are taken to prevent collateral damage.”

The base came under attack from an initial volley of four rockets Tuesday night. No one was injured and no equipment was damaged as a result. Initial reports indicated that the insurgents intended a second volley but Task Force Thunder’s counterattack prevented it.

Nigeria: Jihad Threat Worries Christians

Church of Christ in Nigeria (COCIN), has called on the Federal Government to take extra security precautions to protect law abiding Nigerians, following threats of Jihad by Northern Muslim leaders.
The call was contained in a communiqué issued in Jos yesterday, signed by COCIN President, Reverend Pandang Yamsat, and Secretary-General, Reverend John Audu, after a two-day executive meeting of the body.

According to them, "Council expresses grave concern over the shouts of marginalisation by Muslim leaders in the north, followed by threats of jihad if the Federal Government does not reverse what they perceived as unfair distribution of national offices.

"The cry of marginalisation sounds very strange, even provocative, coming from the same people who are unrelenting in marginalising Christians, including their indigenes, in Sokota, Katsina, Zamfara, Kano, Kebbi, Jigiwa, Yobe and Bauchi states, and treating them like second class citizens in the land of their birth."

Strange, but not surprising. In doing research for my forthcoming book The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam and the Crusades (Regnery) I have discovered that the rhetoric of victimization has been used by Muslims at least since then. They commit aggression against non-Muslims. Then the non-Muslims retaliate, and the Muslims act as if they are committing unprovoked aggression. The retaliation by non-Muslims becomes the new pretext for renewed violence. You can see this in Iraq and Israel and elsewhere today.

The council said the threat of launching a jihad is "a crude and uncivilised way of settling disagreements in a democratic dispensation in the 21st century."

Nice post, Cindy.
It is very difficult for liberal/pc types to recognize, much less understand a mind set from 1500 years ago. Case in point being the adulation given the concept of 'Islamic socialism' that was given several years ago. Some of the gullible were lured into supporting this concept until they met the monolith of the concept of Islam(no Marxism, socialism, ...whatever 'ism'), only Islam, unchanging, unchangeable, and sufficient unto itself. From the Wahabbi/jihadi point of view, they(the Wahabbi et al) have
more than ample justification for their actions. And while aggression against non-muslims is justified(actually called for, in their Book), even more aggression is called for when the apostate and the hieratic are involved(for instance, the 'Shia'.
Our job, in my opinion, is not merely to persuade, but also to convince,several millions of our fellow citizens of the
size and evil and imminent danger of such a faith.

Mother Passes Malaria to Baby (NY - 4/23/05)

April 23, 2005 — A Long Island mother passed malaria on to her fetus in only the fifth known case in the country in five years, and the first in New York, doctors said...

"You would think of malaria in places like Africa, India and Latin America."

The mother, a Guatemalan immigrant who came to New York in 2003, later said she was diagnosed with malaria in her native country.

Malaria is caused by a one-celled organism that is transmitted by mosquito and kills between 1 million and 1.5 million people worldwide annually.

Roughly 1,300 cases of malaria are diagnosed in the United States each year, mostly in immigrants and Americans who've traveled to endemic countries.

London, Apr 23 (PTI) A Muslim cleric has been sentenced to 13 years in jail for plotting to blow up a passenger plane with an explosive device hidden in his shoe, in the first major terrorism prosecution in Britain since the 9/11 attacks.

Saajid Badat, a 26-year-old religious teacher from Gloucester, was sentenced yesterday after he admitted to conspiring with fellow Briton Richard Reid to blow up a passenger jet.

Badat agreed to board and destroy an American-bound flight from Europe three months after the September 11, 2001 attacks killed around 3,000 people in New York and Washington.

Badat bought a ticket to fly from Manchester to Amsterdam on December 17, 2001, and then on to the United States. But he did not take the flight.

Radioactive Reading from Truck is False (VT - 4/23/05)

A faulty reading by a radioactivity detector created some tense moments Friday morning at the weigh station off Route 4 in Fair Haven.

Vermont State Police said the incident took place around 9:30 a.m. when the state's commercial vehicle enforcement division was conducting truck inspections at the weigh station near the New York border.

"All I know is, they hate America," Baharan said of his superiors.

Baharan has been speaking with Philippine authorities ever since his capture but some of his claims seem far-fetched. For example, he claims that Usama bin Laden himself has been keeping tabs on the scuba training via satellite phone. But others seem credible and highly worrisome, primarily that the training is for underwater operations outside of Southeast Asia.
