The mother, a Guatemalan immigrant who came to New York in 2003, later said she was diagnosed with malaria in her native country.
Malaria is caused by a one-celled organism that is transmitted by mosquito and kills between 1 million and 1.5 million people worldwide annually.
Roughly 1,300 cases of malaria are diagnosed in the United States each year, mostly in immigrants and Americans who've traveled to endemic countries.

London, Apr 23 (PTI) A Muslim cleric has been sentenced to 13 years in jail for plotting to blow up a passenger plane with an explosive device hidden in his shoe, in the first major terrorism prosecution in Britain since the 9/11 attacks.
Saajid Badat, a 26-year-old religious teacher from Gloucester, was sentenced yesterday after he admitted to conspiring with fellow Briton Richard Reid to blow up a passenger jet.
Badat agreed to board and destroy an American-bound flight from Europe three months after the September 11, 2001 attacks killed around 3,000 people in New York and Washington.
Badat bought a ticket to fly from Manchester to Amsterdam on December 17, 2001, and then on to the United States. But he did not take the flight.

A faulty reading by a radioactivity detector created some tense moments Friday morning at the weigh station off Route 4 in Fair Haven.
Vermont State Police said the incident took place around 9:30 a.m. when the state's commercial vehicle enforcement division was conducting truck inspections at the weigh station near the New York border.
