The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

We now know more about an alleged attack that triggered an increased national threat level last summer.

That's when U.S. officials said they had uncovered a plot targeting financial institutions. The plot involved bombs, banks and British nationals.

The detail was startling, the targets enormous. They included financial buildings in Washington, New York and New Jersey.

RevivingIslam.com gone?

Well, some good does seem to come from publicizing death threats. The Reviving Islam site on which a poster prayed that Allah would grant him the privilege to murder me seems to be down. A message at the web address says only: "Account Locked. Please contact sales@mpadc.com."

I don't know if this is because of law enforcement action or their own self-censorship. I'll keep you posted as I find out more.

Snip on the origin of glass: During the Phoenician area, a commercial cargo ship with a load of saltpeter anchored near the province of Ptolemais in Syria. The sailors tried to light a fire on the sandy beach. Since they could not find any stones nearby to make a hearth, they used some of the saltpeter from the ship. As the wood burned they noticed that the sand and saltpeter had fused to form a transparent substance which flowed from the hearth. Thus, by pure coincidence, glass was discovered.

The only connection I could draw was the possibility of Syria firing on Turkey from a ship? It's anyone's guess!

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Four homes burned on Hook Creek Road yesterday in a fire that began at 12:14 p.m. Initial investigation by San Bernardino County Fire suggests the fires were arson caused.

The original 911 call was for a fully-involved home. That fire spread to an additional home which was totally destroyed by the afternoon blaze. Two additional homes sustained major damage as trees and about a quarter acre of National Forest land were consumed by the fire.

That spot fire moved into nearby forest land adjacent to one of the burning structures and began moving from tree to tree but luckily, according to firefighters on scene, even with the strong winds that were blowing at the time, the fire moved slowly.

Firefighters were able to douse all of the blazes and begin mop-up operations at 1:05 p.m."

L.I. woman arrested for fake bomb threats

A Ronkonkoma woman who is already facing state charges of filing false reports was arrested Thursday by federal agents for phoning in a fake airline bomb threat.

Samina Faisal, 37, a U.S. citizen born in Pakistan, was released on $250,000 bail by a magistrate-judge after appearing in federal district court in Brooklyn. (snip)

Arrest Made in Suspicious Powder Scares

June 2, 2005, Des Moines -A Marshalltown man is in jail tonight, charged as a terrorist. He's accused of mailing suspicious powder and threatening to blow people up. And it might have been some household cleaners that set him off.

Investigators connected the man to two separate powder incidents in the metro in recent weeks. Investigators say their case with 46-year-old Anand Nariboli started with simple household chemicals.

They say Nariboli was upset that they didn't clean properly. So he mailed a letter in February to the company that made them, Dow Chemical in Milwaukee. They say Nariboli threatened to blow up the FBI and wrote "I will exterminate westerners and destroy all buildings in the west the next day." Then, on May 19th, part of Mercy Medical Center shut down for hours after a US Postal worker said she'd been exposed to some type of powdery substance.

Authorities say Nariboli mailed the letter containing rat poison with a statement that said all Western Europeans will be "inflicted by pain more painful than all the weapons in the universe tomorrow."

Alarm out for missing truck with fertilizer

Arkansas security officials reported information concerning a missing J&M Transport truck with a load of fertilizer on June 1. J&M is based in Cabot, Ark.

Randy McDaniel, 50, received a 51,000-pound load of urea fertilizer in Little Rock on May 25. McDaniel never reached the intended destination in Stuttgart, Ark., according to Highway ISAC and Mark Tabor of the Transportation Security Administration, who is based at Little Rock National Airport.

The fertilizer and vehicle are still missing. The driver has not made contact with his girlfriend or family members, officials said. They noted that former President Clinton is scheduled to arrive in Little Rock June 3.

Urea fertilizer can be used to make explosives.

The missing truck is a red 1996 Volvo with Arkansas plate F254068. It has a J&M Transport logo on the door, and a white trailer with Oklahoma plate 2106FB.

Are the Taleban regrouping?

Islamabad - Gauging the strength of the factions, particularly the Taleban, fighting coalition and Afghan forces in Afghanistan, is an imprecise science.

Both sides have significantly stepped up operations against each other in the past few months, but they tend to talk up the overall impact their strikes have.

The Americans recently characterised the Taleban as a declining force.

However, some analysts say Afghanistan is witnessing an increase, not a decrease, in what they describe as the Taleban's sophisticated attacks and they believe that will continue during the coming months.

Increased attacks

As winter turned to spring in Afghanistan and the Taleban resumed guerrilla style offensives in the south and east, American commanders were declaring them a weakened, losing force.

They say they are down to around 2,000 men with declining appeal to former leaders and to the population.

But the American belief, that they are still funded and armed by al-Qaeda, coupled to the frequency and deadliness of their attacks in the past two months, tests that theory to the full.

One Kabul-based analyst said that although the Americans had stepped up anti-Taleban operations, he expected attacks by the rebel movement to increase in the coming months.

He said the real measure of their strength was not their numbers but the sophistication and degree of co-ordination of those attacks.

Sending a message

The assassination of Mawlawi Fayaz, he said, followed by a strike inside the mosque during his funeral, proved just how sophisticated.

Since the cleric was a close ally of Hamid Karzai, it served as a message to the Afghan president of the Taleban's continuing threat.

The killing of Kabul's recently appointed police chief, another ally, sent the same message.

If the Taleban were responsible for the Kandahar mosque attack, in the analyst's words, "they got a lot of bangs for their bucks."

KANDAHAR - Kandahar Gov. Gul Agha Sherzai said the suicide bomber's body had been found and he was part of Osama bin Laden's terror network.

"The attacker was a member of al-Qaida. We have found documents on his body that show he was an Arab," Sherzai told reporters.

Kandahar was a stronghold of the hard-line Taliban regime that was ousted from power in late 2001 by U.S.-led forces for harboring bin Laden.

A foreign media reported that it received a call from a man claiming to be a Taliban member who said the movement was responsible for the attack. It did not identify the caller or say if the report had been verified.

But a purported Taliban spokesman, Mullah Latif Hakimi, said in a telephone call to The Associated Press that the group was not responsible for the bombing.

Journalist Samir Kassir assassinated in Beirut blast

BEIRUT - Prominent anti-Syrian journalist Samir Kassir was assassinated Thursday when his parked car blew up in a residential sector in the Beirut neighborhood of Ashrafieh.

Prominent opposition figures immediately blamed the blast on the Lebanese regime and its political masters in Syria, which was forced to end its harsh 29-year military presence in the country after the February murder of former premier Rafiq Hariri.

Someone posted earlier (I'm sorry I don't remember who) about one of our military leaders in Iraq who is named Kent. That sounded the most plausable to me.
