The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

We now know more about an alleged attack that triggered an increased national threat level last summer.

That's when U.S. officials said they had uncovered a plot targeting financial institutions. The plot involved bombs, banks and British nationals.

The detail was startling, the targets enormous. They included financial buildings in Washington, New York and New Jersey.

What is missing on the recent discussions of the Iranian EMP threat are:
1. Size of the THERMOnuclear (megaton range) explosion
2. Altitude
3. Technical means to get warhead to altitude and set it off a the precise altitude.

To fry every microchip in the US, a warhead in the neighborhood of 200 megatons exploded near the boundary of the atmosphere would be required. At BEST, terrorists are attributed with having small nukes in the tens of kiloton range. Megatonage nukes are generally hydrogen (fusion) bombs, not plutonium/uranium (fission) bombs. Yes, a small nuke at altitude would be disruptive, but would not disable the entire country. Much discussion is fear-mongering and there should be a responsible discussion about the actual requirements needed to pull this off.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House went on a security alert Wednesday that prompted President Bush to be moved from the Oval Office on reports that an unidentified aircraft had entered a no-fly zone over the White House compound.

The alert lasted only a few minutes before it was rescinded. "There was a report of a possible violation of restricted air space and it was cleared," said Lorie Lewis, a spokesperson for the Secret Service.

Officers carrying shotguns were seen at gates around the property and were hurrying tourists from the White House grounds.

Judge delays Ressam sentencing hearing

In a stunning move this morning, a federal judge postponed the sentencing of admitted terrorist Ahmed Ressam to give the Algerian three months to consider whether he wants to begin cooperating with authorities again.

Judge John C. Coughenour gave Ressam until July 28 to change his mind about working with law enforcement. Ressam, 37, became disillusioned after a few years and stopped cooperating.

Coughenour said that delaying the sentencing for three months won't be the end of the world, "but there is a potential for the world to be in a better place" if Ressam, who plotted to bomb the Los Angeles airport, reconsiders his position.
