My Norton is driving me nuts
April 14, 2005 | pbrown

I've had to uninstall and then reinstall my Norton Internet Security 2004, a total of four times in the last two weeks. I am at my wits end, which for me, isn't too far a journey. Any help on what could possibly be wrong would be greatly appreciated.

Luckily for me, he's very patient (I know zilch about 'puters) and talked me through all kinds of techie-type things but none of them helped. Now I'm waiting for disks to fix it, to arrive-he said this will solve the problems.

You're a very optimistic person, aren't you?
Regarding advice on better security, see backhoe's post #185. You're on the right track already with Firefox.

Norton up through 2003 was good -- 2004 was a piece of crap; I shifted to Kaspersky AV and haven't looked back.

I think you must have me mixed up with someone else. I just went back and read my original reply to you. Here is what it says.

And we have now officially heard from a Norton employee. Thanks, but you are running against the tide here.

I don't see what you consider stupid or Juvinille.

Or, do they just scratch their heads over a missing image or a page that won't load and decide the website designer has screwed up? They move on to another site and take their business with them.

Funny thing is, I loaded Norton 2004 and didn't have to change a thing. I have never been restricted from any of the sites I surf. I wonder why anyone would have an image loading problem just because they use Norton FW.

If you read back through the thread, you will see that it is words like "advertising", "advertisement" or "ad" that cause the problem, apparently an attempt to block the banner advertisements that afflict some sites.

I maintain a hobby-related website, and I have seen Norton 2003 removing content from my own site when viewing it on my computer. I can't say whether the 2004 version does this since I don't have it (and never will).

I learned that this can be avoided by carefully choosing wording and file names. For example, I saw a file named ad_1.jpg removed by Norton (and it would not even give you a red "X" to show you that something was missing). I renamed the file to ad1.jpg and, lo and behold, there it was. These files are relevant to the content of the site (they are actually scans of vintage print advertisements).

Regardless of whether Norton can be configured to disable this interference with legitimate site content, site users might have this problem without even knowing it is happening. Site operators who are not aware of this issue might just be losing money in the form of lost business.

Between you, your wife, the dog, ear drops, and the various maladies, I get a lot of laughs. Maybe we have a similar sense of humor, or maybe it's just me, but whatever the case, I find some of your comments to be hilarious. Were you in the FR 'room' on a voice/text program called FireTalk back in the Spring and Summer and on through the highly contentious Presidential election of 2000?

No, back then my hardware was so antiquated ( I think it was Win95 on a 66mhtz [ not a typo! ] machine, and dialup ) I didn't even try Firetalk. In fact, I spent half my time disinfecting the damned thing and the other half kluging things together to keep it running and online. That, and cleaning junk out of the infamous Windows Registry-- I swear the computer sat there idle and Windows ran secretly, corrupting its own entries- it was always filling up with bad stuff.

Finally being able to upgrade the home PC and relegate that piece of Weird Iron to a shelf was a great relief. In defense of it, it was built for DOS 3.3, which we ran for years around here before flirting with 6.22 and then an IBM version of Win 3.1 ( again, no typo- it actually says 3.1 rather than the more common 3.11 )I found in a throwaway pile at wifey's workplace.

As for that sense of humor? Or maybe it's irony? Some is from my folks, who lived long, saw a lot of good and misery, and always taught me that if you can't change something you are stuck with cursing it, or laughing at it, and it's better to laugh. Although under ther right circumstances, nothing beats a few well-applied anglo-saxon swear words. And a few blows from a 5-pound lead hammer.

Some of it's Southern-- from that old "Well, you can't win fer losing" and "If it weren't fer bad luck, I wouldn't have no luck a'tall" culture where it's recognized that a few laughs oils the wheels of society. That, and a little common courtesy.

Okay - one more time I'm going to tell you. When you make a statement like - "And we have now officially heard from a Norton employee" - that is an accusation. You have no knowledge or information which would substantiate that statement - therefore - it's an accusation.

If you were joking it wasn't funny - because I didn't appreciate the tag team targeting of me because I happen to use a product called Norton - which somehow does not meet with your approval .. like I said, WHOOPIE - I am entitled to purchase any product I want - if you don't like it - tough bananas.

Then you suggested that I was in the wrong in my choice of products because - "... you are running against the tide here" - which again suggests I'm some bad person because I don't agree with your view of a software .. ROTFLOL!!

You can't get much more stupid and juvenile than that!

And .. thanks for the information about REGEDIT - which my son tells me I should never touch without his assistance. Were you trying to damage my computer with such a suggestion .. Hmmmmmm? That's even more juvenile and criminal I might add.

You read to literally my friend. You say yourself no one could know that you are a Norton employee. Of course, I could not know that. In other words, I was not accusing you of being a Norton employee. I was accusing you of cheerleading for the product like one.

Perhaps a bit too obscure a reference and I should have been more clear. I simply had no idea you would - or anyone - would take it so literally.

You are taking this way too seriously. My point is that you are wrong about Norton being a good product if the comments in this thread are any sort of a guide. You are going against the stream on this one.

You don't read very clearly. Go back and read my post on that again. Of course I would never suggest anyone do something to damage their computer. You are way out of line!

Here are the warnings I offered in the discussion of the windows registry
- If you don't know what you are doing, be very, very careful.
- DON'T delete anything in your registry if you don't know what you are doing.

What do you want me to do, put it in bold for you? Your son is right. You definately should not touch the registry. But the rest of us that know this is sometimes the only way to clear unwanted programs completely from our systems and we will go in there and properly (and carefully) clean them out.

To anyone else out there reading this: If you do not know what you are doing in the Windows registry, DO NOT mess with it in anyway. You can easily mess up your system.

I didn't read much of the thread but I'll say this: I I lived near you I'd happily come over and install Linux for free -- you'd be done with the hassles -- and I'd bring a pizza, too!

Everytime I have used Norton it has done some bad stuff to my computer. I hate it.

I use McAfee without any problems.

Thanks .. but no thanks!

I'm not having any problems with either XP or Norton. I have no desire to change anything.

"DON'T delete anything in your registry if you don't know what you are doing"

Yes, you did say that .. but if you were so convinced I was such a novice that you had to caution me to be very very careful - how dangerous was that for you to even suggest messing with the system registry. I just think that's a little careless because you don't have any idea what a person's computer skills are.

Since you're convinced you didn't do anything wrong and I'm convinced you did - I'm ending the conversation.

Hey watch it I had a TRS-80

LOL

I use Internet Suite and Anti Virus Both Norton and they both work great had problems if I used Tiny Personal Firewall when Norton is running. But The Suite also has a firewall that blocks out every port.

To each their own. What ever works for one who needs it.

I had to get rid of Trend because it no longer updated.
And you can no longer just download and install the defs either.

My computer survived the surgery. Don't even ask how many times I had to use System Restore.

Fire fox, does look good. I can't download spybot. I had it once on this computer a long time ago but deleted it. It won't let me fire it back up for some goofy reason.

I messed up royally a few times and lost Yahoo, messenger, IE, and fire fox. System restore is our friend.

I don't know what I should do and haven't done yet but, I'm sure this computer will let me know when the time comes. So many programs are Dependant on each other in order to run.

This thread just goes to show what great people Free Republic has on it.

The writing is so tiny now my eyes are hurting. I used to remember what buttons to push to make the words larger, but my brain is over taxed for now. LOL

When you're using Firefox, in the toolbar go to Tools/Options/General/Fonts & Colors to set font size. For temporary + or - font size, go to View/Text Size. System settings would be in your Control Panel.

"Recently I upgraded it to version 2005."

I had Norton System Works on my Windows 98 SE notebook and they wouldn't let me renew it and forced me to buy Norton Anti-Virus 2005. I use "Add/Remove Programs" to uninstall it as directed and installed the new 2005 version.

It seemed to make everything run slower so I tried to de-frag but it hung up and said to run scan disk as I may have a problem with the hard disk. I had always used "Speed Disk" and "Disk Dr." in the 2001 version. Then when I re-booted I got a message that some of the Norton Anti-Virus files were missing, or not installed and that I must uninstall and reinstall Norton anti-virus which I dutifully did.

The slowness kept annoying me along with not being able to de-frag or run scan disk after defragging as it would stall out before finishing. I got the old 2001 version CD out and ran Disk Dr. from the CD and it fixed a couple errors and told me that the hard drive was 13% fragmented. There was no "Speed Disk" defragging program on the old CD so I tried De-frag again and that still wouldn't finish the job and screwed up Norton 2005 once again so I called their support line.

Today I went through FIVE technicians with East Indian Accents!!! (not that there's anything wrong with that) First I was told I had to download "Removal Tools" for both versions, old and new that they would email the links to me. Fine! Got the email but the links wouldn't work. Called 'em back and they promised to email the actual "*.exe" files to remove stuff left behind after the uninstalls so I could reinstall the new version without problems of defragging, etc.

Now the last one promised for the second time to send the danged email with the files I need to do this. When I called to complain they weren't coming, the techie led me through another effort at reinstalling just the new version and I let her get off the line just a little too fast when it looked like it was going to succeed, because it didn't!!!

Hi SW. Sorry about your Norton problems. I hope someone can help you work them out (Any advice from me would certainly make it worse, lol).

Maybe pbrown, who started the thread, can offer some advice or ping some folks that were helpful to them.

Best of luck!
