It has a fissure separating a huge chunk of the island apparently ready to collapse into the Atlantic, potentially causing a mega-tsunami that will eventually inundate the eastern seacoast of the US

The opinion of the overwhelming majority of tsunami scientists is that the collapse would not generate a long-range tsunami and the mountain isn't any particular threat to the US.

But it makes for a great "what if" for writers and newspaper editors. Just like Toba and Yellowstone.

Yep. The problem is it that it's overwhelming attention to somewhat less cinematic (but much more probable) threats like Mag 7-7.5 quakes in a variety of US cities.

Yep, the Midwest is going to rock and roll one of these days as well as several large cities on the East Coast. None are prepared for earthquakes like the West Coast and such an event could result in a unimaginable disaster.

Of course we're all going to die before that happens because of Yellowstone, Toba, the bird flu, or Marburg.

Between all the earthquake related tsunamis, asteroid related tsunamis, islands falling into the ocean tsunamis, asteroids causing global warming, volcanos causing global warming, cow farts causing global warming, earthquakes in Indonesia causing American volcanos to erupt, American volcanos causing Indonesian earthquakes, I'm getting tired of the earth getting ready to end. Can we get this over with all ready?

We have the movie Super Volcano. The movie The Day After Tomorrow, Armeggedon, Deep Impact, and whatever else. Do you think that Hollyweird, the enviro-nazis, and the rest of the liberal whack jobs have global catastrophy on there minds?

The other realistic threat is Mt. Rainer collapsing and a major lahar ensuing (doesn't even require an eruption; could happen tonight without warning) that would potentially kill thousands in several Washington towns that frankly should never have been built..

But it's just not exciting enough to hype.

I've actually seen a show or two about the threat of Ranier (from either that scenario or an eruption) but for the most part it isn't a major topic on TV. Then again, the Discovery Channel and the Learning Channel have basically become the hotrod and decorating channels.

You forgot Independence Day. Let's not assume that all possible end-of-the-world scenarios are natural.

I've got this funny feeling that soon Indonesia may be wiped off the map along with all its inhabitants.

Considering its enormous size and the fact recent activity in Indonesia has been pretty much normal, that's highly unlikely.

Well, this small volcanic eruption killed no one.

The last March Indonesian quake killed mostly Christians.

So, no, sorry to disappoint you.
