It is the hardest, cruelest question in television right now, and the one that no one seems willing to ask for the obvious reasons. But it hangs in midair nonetheless - obvious, intrusive, and uncomfortable: Who will replace Peter Jennings?
The anchor of ABC News' flagship broadcast last week announced that he has lung cancer and will occasionally miss the program as he undergoes chemotherapy starting this week. Nevertheless, Jennings' illness has forced the question that has been forestalled for years. Just exactly who will replace one of the great anchors in TV history?

Pee Wee Herman......
Levy..Levine...what's the difference...
IMHO, This is the guy who would bring in far more market share and finally bring the right perspective to world news...
Mikhail Gorbachev has the left-wing credentials for the job.
I agree...Eugene Levy will do......
Hope I didn't offend anybody,..Mark Levine is probably an excellant choice.
Network anchorman has to be one of the most powerful positions in society, yet it's remarkably untouchable.
Consider the large number of high school and college kids who can easily be influenced by that type of image to seek that type of position for their career, yet the number of available positions dwarves almost any other profession. One would think this would favor more competition for the positions, yet it appears the incredible lack of turnover more directly implies a complete lack of competition.
It does not do much good to be ON a feeding tube, better to have a feeding tube surgically implanted IN you.
I guarantee you I could "surgically implant" a feeding tube in that jerk in such a way that he'd be ON it every time he sat down.
(Actually, I do hope things turn out OK for him.)
Point is....ABC news anchor has become pointless....
I wish people would read the articles before they comment.
"World" refers to "World News Tonight" the show, not the planet. Hence the quotes around the world in the Newsday title. And yes, since the star of the show, Jennings is working on dodging the Grim Reaper the show will have to change.
"Headline reads Changes 'World' not 'the' world--Jennings show was called World News I believe."
See how little attention I pay to him.
I think you're right it is called World News Tonight. I'm not going to check it though. I simply don't care.
"It does not do much good to be ON a feeding tube, better to have a feeding tube surgically implanted IN you."
OKay, put one IN him and then try to remove it. You'll hear all the liberals screaming bloody murder.
I'm not sure thats true-yet.They still get a larger audience than anyone we would prefer don't they?
Rather might be available.
In my wildest dreams: Mark Levine.
Then he can be the whiniest anchor in TV history.
hahaha...no, they meant the actual world. Enclosing World in single quotes was their way of being cute while providing the headline writer plausable deniability.
I vote for George Suffinenvelopes. He's done so well on Sunday morning, that weekday evenings will be very easy.
I dont think so, but ok....
it is just a poorly written article.
The question on my mind is "Just who watches ABC News ?"
LOL! I shall endeavor to meet ABC's high standards for non-viewer awareness ;-)
