A Washington Post investigation in Virginia and Maryland found that nearly one in four rape reports in 1990-91 was unfounded. When contacted by the newspaper, many "victims" admitted they lied. More shocking figures come from a study by now-retired Purdue University sociologist Eugene Kanin published in Archives of Sexual Behavior in 1994. After reviewing the police records of an Indiana town, Kanin found that of 109 reports of rape filed in 1978-87, 45 -- or 41 percent -- turned out to be false, as the women themselves admitted after the investigation.

There are so many reasons. The one that irritates me the most is the "I'm so embarrased I had sex with a stranger" fake rape claim. This happens too many times. A classic one from couple months ago.

I think both are equally bad. I also think that anyone who falsely claims rape should receive a jail sentence equivalent to that a rapist. No suspended sentence, no community service in lieu of jail time.

While I would NEVER condone real rape, and I think these guys should be strung up, I often wonder if a falsely reported rape may have something to do with a woman's perception of the event in hindsight, often stemming from remorse.

A case in point may be date rape, of which I have always been a little skeptical. Before I get flamed, I will say -- I am ignorant of all the situations. And no man has the right to take advantage of woman. Nevertheless, a woman who willingly goes into a man's room, or invites him into her room, or gets sloppy drunk (often the case now on these crazy campuses) is setting herself up for potential abuse. Often, it is her word against his. She may have been seduced while under the influence of alcohol, and, feeling foolish after she has sobered up, will say she was raped.

This is why (Orthodox) Judaism is strict about single, unrelated men and women being alone together. I repeat: no man has the right to rape a woman. But I think a woman has to take a certain measure of responsibility for her behavior, especially when certain situations can be avoided.
