A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

~ Billie, Mama_Bear, Dutchess, Aquamarine, Dolly Cali ~

Welcome to TGIF at the Finest!   We hope you've been having as much fun as we have with our essays and/or spotlight on various FReepers. From the beginning, we've been kicking back on Saturdays and Sundays and simply reviewing the features of the week; our weekend threads now start on Friday and continue through Sunday. If you missed seeing any of this week's threads and want to say hello there now, just click on the link for that particular day. If you'd like to drop in and out of this thread today through Sunday, please feel free to do that also. One of us will try to be around to see the welcome mat is still out, put the coffee pot on, and maybe even bring fresh flowers for the table. : )

Faithful Ambition

Read:
Galatians 6:12-18

God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. -Galatians 6:14

Bible In One Year: 2 Samuel 16-18

cover In the late 19th century, a former student of Oxford University became the Lord Chancellor of England. One of his classmates became Britain's Foreign Secretary. A third gained an international reputation as an author. A fourth, Temple Gairdner, was perhaps the most gifted of his classmates but did not achieve fame and influence. Why? He accepted Jesus as his Savior and lived as a missionary in obscure and dangerous places.

Gairdner could have become as well-known as his fellow students. But when he decided to become a missionary, he wrote to his sister, "I have found ambition dreadfully difficult to cope with. It seems so natural, especially with one's upbringing and education, to look forward to making a mark and a name, and so awfully hard to resign oneself to living and dying tucked away in some corner."

We probably will not be called upon to make that kind of sacrifice. But are we willing to serve our Savior in radical obedience? To serve Him faithfully we must put aside our own interests, as Paul did: "God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ" (Galatians 6:14).

We don't need to be famous. But we do need to be faithful wherever God calls us. -Vernon Grounds

Let us then be true and faithful,
Trusting, serving, every day;
Just one glimpse of Him in glory
Will the toils of life repay. -Hewitt

The world rewards quick success; God rewards long-term faithfulness.

Had I gone for the "famous" I would probably not be as happy as I am today.

I had the opportunity, but for some reason chose not to go that way. I have often wondered why.............but have never regretted my decisions and so believe I know the answer to the "why?"

Thank you, Sir for your devotional.

I'm not what anyone would call a "religious" person if the definition includes being a regular church-goer.

There are times when I feel far closer to the Almighty when I am sitting out in my field or by the water and there are other times when I feel the need to be in a physical building.

I don't always comment, but I never fail to read your morning devotionals..........more times than not they give me reason to pause, think, reflect, and pray. For that, my FRiend, I thank you.

FYI
Mortgage Rates Fall on Low March Job Figures

(April 8, 2005) -- The national average commitment rate on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage was 5.93 percent, with an average 0.7 points, for the week ending April 7, 2005, Freddie Mac says. That is down from last week when it averaged 6.04 percent. Last year at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 5.79 percent.

The average for the 15-year FRM this week is 5.48 percent, with an average 0.7 points, down from last week when it averaged 5.58 percent. A year ago, the 15-year FRM averaged 5.12 percent.

Five-Year Treasury-indexed hybrid adjustable-rate mortgages (ARMs) averaged 5.33 percent this week, with an average 0.7 points, down from 5.43 last week. There is no annual historical information for last year since Freddie Mac only began tracking this mortgage rate at the start of this year.

One-year Treasury-indexed adjustable-rate mortgages (ARMs) averaged 4.23 percent this week, with an average 0.7 point, down from last week when it averaged 4.33 percent. At this time last year, the one-year ARM averaged 3.65 percent.

"Mortgage rates slipped this week on news that job creation in March came out much lower than had been expected," said Frank Nothaft, vice president and chief economist. "This would indicate there is less money being spent and therefore, less inflationary pressure on the economy."

"Although mortgage rates will rise this year, we expect the 2005 annual average will be below levels recorded just three years ago."

Good Saturday morning, m' Lady.

That looks so much like my lake.

The day has dawned here sunny and beautiful so just hang on, sunniness is comin' your way.

And , as it turned out, it didn't rain on us as we traveled to Atlanta Thursday. My husband is a very good driver anyway, rain or shine. (I can no longer drive. :-( Ah well...)

Thanks so much for the little puppy pic you sent my way. He is so cute...I think I'm in love!

Gotta get back to yard & flower pots. At the rate I'm going I might get done with the spring plantings and tendings by next winter. It's a good thing I like it so much!

Take care Sheena/Storm and enjoy this lovely day God has sent us. Hugs to you...

What a delightful communique, Lakeside!
So glad my travel prayers for your trip into 'Lanta were heard and you had safe passage.

"We Are Clones" - Exhibit 'A':

"Gotta get back to yard & flower pots. At the rate I'm going I might get done with the spring plantings and tendings by next winter. It's a good thing I like it so much!"

You and I now race at snail's pace, determination and enthusiasm not in the least diminished!
We shall overcome!!
Just don't watch us and expect gracefulness as we stumble and lurch around, and crawl on hands and knees looking for something to steady us so we can get up off the ground! -- no matter I live on a corner with a fair amount of traffic going past.

There still is within this wavering body the 18-year old Woman Marine who at Parris island could have marched to the DI's cadence call until Doomsday without ever tiring or losing his rhythm; proudly carried the American Flag out front of 8 full companies, leading the Dedication Parade Ceremony for the Iwo Jima Monument that is the goal of every Marine recruit, dividing them from scum and, finally, the title "Marine."

I still march to God's call, and glory in all His Creations He sent me to appreciate...

The little old lady they see fumbling has been from the Florida Keys to above the Arctic Circle in Alaska, after driving the Alaska Highway through Canada; up and down the Eastern seaboard above Niagara Falls; lived in eight scattered states, several often...

Actually, my favorite Nursery opens officially today, and in a while I'm heading there to scout for certain plants I want! I'm anxious to see again their Official Greeter - a friendly Golden Retriever who is their best employee..:))

Will be thinking of you, fellow grubber, and smiling braodly..:))

just the result of too little/much? coffee..:))

The Cross And The Crown

Read:
Mark 11:1-11

Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, lowly and riding on a donkey. -Zechariah 9:9

Bible In One Year: 2 Samuel 19-21

cover On the day we call Palm Sunday the Lord Jesus presented Himself to Israel as their King when He rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. Had He been astride a spirited horse, He would have looked more kingly. But Zechariah had prophesied He would come in the humble way that He did.

Why? Kings of the East rode donkeys when on errands of peace. The horse was used as a charger in war.

The multitudes thought in terms of earthly prosperity and freedom from Rome. So they cried, "Hosanna in the highest!" (Mark 11:10). Yet a few days later, the shouts of the crowd became: "Crucify Him!" (15:13).

Some who declare themselves admirers of Jesus do not recognize Him as the Savior of sinners. But our deepest need cannot be met until our sin problem is overcome. For this reason Christ rode into Jerusalem on a donkey with His face set toward the cross, knowing full well the shameful and painful death He would suffer there. Now, having paid the price for human sin, He is highly exalted at God's right hand and will come again as King of kings and Lord of lords. His cross had to precede His crown.

If we want to be part of His heavenly kingdom, we must trust Him as our Savior now. -Herb Vander Lugt

If in heaven a crown you'd wear
And bright palms of victory bear,
Christ the Savior you must claim;
Find redemption in His name. -Anon.

There would be no crown-wearers in heaven had Christ not been the cross-bearer on earth.
