Unfortunately Glenn Beck is no longer on here in Atlanta so the local audience will be diminished. I am doing my part, however, especially with Fox 5.

Thanks for posting the link for the will to live. When my pc is up and running again, I'm printing it out. Adobe Acrobat just crawls on this poor old computer, so I just skimmed it for now.

It's horrifying to see that many people with living wills are not as safe as they think.

If memory serves, hospice costs are less expensive, and medicare/caid saves almost $.50. per $1.00 spent there. I discovered this while researching the finances of the Terri thing. Hospices are the golden calves of health care.

Local paper now has the following story:

Woman, 81, at center of feeding tube feud
http://lagrangenews.com/new.php?StoryType=full

One minor clarification based on the local paper's story:

The granddaughter reportedly has been giving some food and hydration by mouth: " . . . [Probate Judge Donald] Boyd said Gaddy testified at the hearing that she feeds her grandmother Jello, chips of ice and 'anything else she'd be willing to eat.' "

The nephew's concern is based on the report of a hospice nurse, based on the story: "Kenneth Mullinax, the patient's nephew of Birmingham, Alabama, said a hospice nurse told him that Magouirk had not received substantial nourishment since March 28."

Local paper confrimation. This is important. AND, since she's being fed by mouth, she isn't vegetative, is she? Another confirmation?

Yes, to me the local story confirms the key points. She is in hospice and is not being provided with enough nutrition and hydration to sustain her life.

It is unfortunate that the WND article's headline may be misleading. It seems Mae did not have a feeding tube. (It's not clear to me whether she did in the hospital or not; if so, their title may be accurate.) Thus, the granddaughter didn't yank it, but denied the insertion of one. But I have to check on that.

In any case, the result is the same: Mae is being allowed to "slip away" through inadequate fluids and nutrition.

Just back at my computer after being away most of the day.

Beth must be breaking Mae's heart; that is, if Mae knows Beth is responsible.

I hope it does mushroom. I hope the country will be thoroughly informed about what is going on, before we dehydrate more innocent folks.

Maybe. Perhaps Mae made a mistake and would want this. I'm not saying that we should act on a guess like that, if she left clear written instructions, but neither should we make assumptions the other way and project what "must" be.

Even suicide is against the law, as well as murder. Why is Dr. Kervorkian in jail.

More importantly, we should not break God's law.

Have you seen this story?

The Will to Live
When Marjorie Nighbert entered a nursing home after having a stroke, she did not expect to be starved to death, but that is what happened when she became a victim of her own "wishes."

Like many people, she did not want her life to be prolonged when death was imminent. So Nighbert created a durable power of attorney (DPA), in which she gave her brother control over medical decisions in case she could not make them for herself. And according to the family lawyer, Nighbert said she did not want a feeding tube if she became terminally ill.

When Nighbert fell ill the nursing home followed the orders of the DPA and denied her food and water for two weeks. But then something unexpected happened: She asked to be fed. A court battle ensued, and the court ultimately upheld the nursing home's decision to deny Nighbert food and water. According to the judge, Nighbert was not competent to ask for food, and to give her food would constitute "extraordinary means."

Nighbert died on April 6, 1995.

More importantly, we should not break God's law.

Well, I'm with the early Christians who realized that if you're a true Christian, you'd want to be with your Creator, and anyone who loved and trusted Him wouldn't be overly fond of this earthly existence--i.e., not tied here and eager to leave.

Now..much to the dismay of many, I'm not going to follow their example and jump off a cliff tonight, but hypothetically, should I want to do so tomorrow, my wishes and religion should be respected, whether you follow Christ's ways, or the Church's, or some other God and His law.

Have you seen this story?

Well, the story sure is incomplete. We have DPA control going to the brother, but the nursing home is doing the acting.

In any case, these things show that it's essential that we take the time and effort to refine what our wishes are, and then clearly communicate them. Then, also, it's essential that society, the courts, etc., respect those wishes.

BTW, do you believe it's suicide for someone to do something that he knows will result in his death, even if he doesn't actively "kill himself"?

Actually, upon further review, I believe I was incorrect about the headline. I think WND is referring to the few hours WND reports a feeding tube was in on April 1st before the granddaughter sought and gained emergency guardianship before the probate court judge. I had missed the report that the feeding tube was in for a few hours then. I had thought only IV fluids were started.

Why is Dr. Kervorkian in jail?

Conviction for second-degree murder and delivery of a controlled substance.

And I believe he's in prison, not jail.

Now please provide the citation I requested for your claim. No offense, but I'm getting pretty tired of the "Proof by Assertion" that has become the norm here at FR these days, and you just happen to be the one I was reading when I decided I've had enough. :-)
