All this adulation of John Paul II, a man of monumental moral stature, must be gnawing at MSM innards.
You could almost hear the command go out from the NBC honchos: "find me something we can use to bash a conservative. Make it Bush if you can."
And sure enough, Today managed to come up with a great two-fer this morning, managing to take swipes at both W and Condi over the exclusion of Jimmy Carter from the US delegation to the papal funeral.
Andrea Mitchell, reporting the story, clearly wasn't buying the White House line that Carter politely asked himself to be removed from the invitation list when he learned that space was very limited.
Tongues-a-clucking, Katie and Andrea wondered aloud at least three times why the White House didn't simply ask the Vatican for one more invitation, "especially because Pres. Carter was the first and only president to invite the Pope to the White House, and shared an interest with him in Third World issues."
Andrea surmised this was all pay-back for Carter's harsh criticism of the Iraq war, which he called a "quagmire," predicting the failure of the January elections.
Not content to snipe at W, Today also managed to get in a shot at Condi. Asked Katie "under the circumstances, wouldn't the right thing have been for Condi Rice to step aside and give Carter her place?"
Mitchell acknowledged that, after all, the Vatican is a state, and as the chief diplomatic official it was logical for Condi to attend. Nevertheless, Andrea opined that Rice should have ceded her seat to Mr. Peanut.
You could almost hear the sigh of relief on the set and in the NBC executive suites. After an intolerable week, Today was back doing what it does best: bashing Republicans.
If you think about it, the last three Democratic presidents have been the worst presidents in history - each one worse that the last.
- Tough to be worse than LBJ, with his "Great Government" (well, yes - he called it "Great 'Society'", but government is always what socialists mean when they say "society") program which wasted several trillion dollars and made the problems it addressed worse.
And that was on top of LBJ's Vietnam policy which, so far as America was concerned, is best summarized as:
- starting it,
- getting lots of folks killed in it, and
- (politically) losing it.
- Tough to be worse than Carter, for reasons you have mentioned and others that we repress the thought of:
- Pardon of draft dodgers,
- Shah of Iran replaced by the Ayatolla; our embassy taken over twice.
- Weak negotiation with Iran and the humiliating failure of the rescue mission, followed by no effort to upgrade the equipment that failed us,
- no leadership against the price controls and overtaxation which were strangling the economy,
- "odd or even" gas lines,
- But then there was Clinton, with
- Whitewater,
- Filegate,
- FBI Filegate,
- Black Hawk Down, OKC bombing, TWA 800, Embassy bombings, the Cole,
- Chinese political contributions,
- White House Coffeegate and "no controlling legal authority,"
- Travelgate,
- Cattlegate,
- Vince Foster,
- Waco,
- Elian,
- Hubbelgate,
- Gorelick's Wall,
- Monicagate,
- VRWC Smeargate,
- "the meaning of 'is',"
- Pardongate . . .
Clinton has the distinction of being the only president arrogant enough to make me entertain the thought that he might refuse to leave office at the end of his term.
Professor at a prestigious East Coast university - say no more!
Speaking of Che, I bought online a bright red T-shirt with a drawing of Ronald Reagan in the same classic style in which Che is always portrayed. Underneath it reads "Viva la Revolucion Reagan!" I wear it to my gym to tick off the liberals in my liberal college town!
LOL. Der Schlickmeister strikes again!
Suits me. Last thing we need is Jimmah in our Texas air space
Awesome! Can you provide a link to such a shirt for all interested Freepers?
Four years of Carter was the cost of nominating Gerald Ford in 1976 instead of Reagan.Even Ford, with the Nixon Pardon on his resume, almost beat Carter;
almost certainly Reagan would have campaigned better than Ford and he was completely isolated from Watergate fallout.
Here's the URL if people are interested in buying.

"Wear a Reagan Revolucion t-shirt and p--- off a liberal!"
After all, he cna't betray us the way he did when he was President.
>>Mitchell still hasn't mentioned the fact that Carter sent his wife and his mother to the other papal funerals. Guess she figures we don't need to know that. Sigh. She is so utterly clueless.<<
If Andrea says that Carter didn't attend the previous popes funerals; bashing the president will be a moot point.
She's not clueless. Shes old enough to have covered the dignitaries who attended Ramsess II's funeral.
The mention of Cahter's name always brings my anger to the fore. He ran the single worst admin until Clinton and the only reason Clinton exceeds the Peanut is because of his failure to stop the terrorists and 9/11 happened. Jimmah was beyond comparison in the number of his gigantic failures, however. If only he could be deported to his paradise, Cuba!
Email this to E.D Hill and Company on Fox and Friends. She kept saying "I wonder why he's not going blah blah bah...
Since we're in a confessing mode, I am ashamed to say I voted for Perot in 92. I still regret that one.
Gee, if you add a little more lipstick and eye makeup, Katie Couric looks just like Jack Nicholson in the Batman movie!
Uh oh, The Ukranian President had better watch out tomorrow on the Today Show. He is making a speech thanking Presidents Bush, President Clinton, and especially President Reagan for their commitment to the Ukraine.
NO CARTER MENTION.
Katie is going to burst a blood vessel.
Amy and reading her book at the table during a State dinner - no manners, no class. I had forgotten about that too. Ya'll keep reminding me of things from those dark years that I had successfully blocked from my mind. LOL
You be the judge!
ROFL!Now as I think of it, I had a similar confusion once before.
Patients in the hospital are given an opportunity to declare their religious affiliation, and some decline to do so and their religious affiliation is listed as, "none." Certainly a group of people that Baptist preachers might want to have the opportunity to talk to.
But I didn't know that when our pastor was talking about doing hospital visitation - and so it sounded odd when he said, "I like to talk to the 'nones'."
Don't feel bad. I remember at that time driving in my car and listening to some guy giving a speech at the National Press Club. It was all about keeping the spending and the deficit down, and I thought it was very impressive. I then learned it was Perot. At least superficially, he had appeal. It took some time to realize he was a little crackpot tyrant with no real ideas, just slogans.
Remember, IS: "measure twice, cut once!"
