Can I just pretend to be a Mexican and sneak across? It would be a lot less trouble than going through the hassle of getting a passport and standing in line.

Is this a joke?

Millions of illegal aliens stream across the border every year from Mexico, with probably more than a few terrorists mixed in, and WE are suspect?

What word best describes this? Surreal? Denial? Public relations sham?

I usually only get this combined angry/dizzy feeling after reading the latest American Communism Leftist Union scam.

Americans will need passports to re-enter the United States from Canada, Mexico, Panama and Bermuda by 2008, part of a tightening of U.S. border controls in an era of terrorist threat, three administration officials said today.

This for sure will secure our borders!

Uh, my wife and I have always used our passports when scuba diving in Cozumel.

This is a problem?

American citizens need a passport. If you're Mexican, you can just walk right across. This stinks.

Hostages for $$$ scheme? Plan to detain Americans to perform the work that Mexicans won't do?

And how about the other way around? What about non-Americans?

Back in 1966, just to see if it could be done, I entered Canada from the US simply by displaying my draft card which said I was "1-A". I also re-entered the United States from Canada the same way.

I did not show an identity card in either direction.

Just wait when they require you to have one to move from state to state within the US.

S'OK with me as long as they enforce the other immigration laws. I've had a passport since I was a kid.

I'm OK with biometric and secure DL's and passports and most especially with secure and enforced voting identification and registration.

"If we can put a man on the moon,......."..... why the heck can't we have one person, one properly registered and identified person per vote. Or just one vote to just one properly identified and registered voter/person?

Am I dreaming here? Naive? Too "right wing"? I guess the "democrats" or "liberals" wouldn't like or approve of it.

This is a joke played on honest American citizens to reduce their freedoms. It has nothing at all to do with immigration control. The government's intent, here, is to make illegal immigration even worse while tightening down on the freedoms of real Americans to come and go as they please.

What the hell's wrong with April 10, 2005???

?????It takes three years for all the illegals to decide their travel plans, and the rag heads to arm their bombs???????? Garbage and BS!

My friends and family cross the border dozens of times a year, time for them to get a passport. Mine is full, I had to get extra pages, hope they don't stamp the damn thing every time I make a run down for shrimp and tequila.

A Cub Scout who can reckon north and south can walk across the Canadian-US border undetected.

Passports will condition sheep to the upcoming government gestapo internal passports.

But in most cases, only passports will do, another U.S. official said.

I don't understand. How about the 10 million illegals who have come to America without passports? Will they have to leave the country and then come back in again with passports? Geeze, I don't understand this at all. Let's see if I get this right: Citizens have to have passports or they can't cross the border to come home. Yet illegals can come in by the millions, and nobody in Homeland Security cares. Very strange.

Now if we only required one when entering the voting booth.

This will make short trips across the border for shopping and a meal really burdensome. Of course with all the drug gang violence along the border right now I wouldn't go across right now anyway.

A secured bulky document such as a passport makes sense. What must be absolutely avoided is a "national ID card".

The fundamental difference is that the former is just enough of a PITA to carry that nobody will have it on their persons as a matter of routine. Thus, it would resist the sort of "mission creep" that has occurred with the Social Security number.

Actually, I'd support requiring a passport to vote (though this would in turn require the government to make them available to citizens at no cost).
