What has changed? Where have I been so out of touch?

Mexico and Canada have been exceptions to the passport requirement. Crazy in my opinion. An invitation to terrorists.

S'OK with me as long as they enforce the other immigration laws. I've had a passport since I was a kid.

I'm OK with biometric and secure DL's and passports and most especially with secure and enforced voting identification and registration.

"If we can put a man on the moon,......."..... why the heck can't we have one person, one properly registered and identified person per vote. Or just one vote to just one properly identified and registered voter/person?

Am I dreaming here? Naive? Too "right wing"? I guess the "democrats" or "liberals" wouldn't like or approve of it.

This is a joke played on honest American citizens to reduce their freedoms. It has nothing at all to do with immigration control. The government's intent, here, is to make illegal immigration even worse while tightening down on the freedoms of real Americans to come and go as they please.

Many conservatives oppose it out of a fear of "big brother." I'm not one of them.

I don't see how people can complain about illegal immigration or illegal voting while also taking the position that nobody here in America should have to provide proof of citizenship. It's very contradictory.

What the hell's wrong with April 10, 2005???

?????It takes three years for all the illegals to decide their travel plans, and the rag heads to arm their bombs???????? Garbage and BS!

It's $97 for a new passport, and $67 for a renewal. They're good for 10 years.

If you have cable TV but can't afford a passport, something's wrong at budget central.

My friends and family cross the border dozens of times a year, time for them to get a passport. Mine is full, I had to get extra pages, hope they don't stamp the damn thing every time I make a run down for shrimp and tequila.

So, how do you know who the real American's are?

I suspect that this is just a "trial balloon" being floated to make the real idea of a secure North American border more palpable.

The reaction to this proposal has been swift and negative. When the proposal is formally made to have a compact with Canada and Mexico to have a secure North America folks will gladly let our neighbors take charge of our security so that we won't have to deal with passports within NA.

Stated so seriously, but you are joking. Right?

A Cub Scout who can reckon north and south can walk across the Canadian-US border undetected.

Passports will condition sheep to the upcoming government gestapo internal passports.

"Just get a dang passport or don't travel out of the country."

Horse manure! If I want to go to Piedras Negras to have a meal and pick up a bottle of almond tequila I shouldn't have to show a passport. This is utter and complete BS. And, I'll leave the country when I damn well please.

Why don't they stick to what they do best in the name of national security, namely body cavity searches of 85 year old women?

Thank you for your reply, but it still does not make sense to me. As an American citizen, I am glad to cooperate. BUT, I simply do not understand the Panama angle according the U.S. (as cited or invented by the author of the article). As an American Citizen, I must always have a valid U.S. passport to leave and enter Panama and the United States. This always has been forever.

But in most cases, only passports will do, another U.S. official said.

I don't understand. How about the 10 million illegals who have come to America without passports? Will they have to leave the country and then come back in again with passports? Geeze, I don't understand this at all. Let's see if I get this right: Citizens have to have passports or they can't cross the border to come home. Yet illegals can come in by the millions, and nobody in Homeland Security cares. Very strange.

Americans will need passports to re-enter the United States from Canada, Mexico, Panama and Bermuda by 2008...

Now if we only required one when entering the voting booth.

"I also had to have a passport to visit Puerta Vallarta back in the 80's. When did they rescind that requirement?"

A passport has never been a requirement going or coming from Mexico.

You do need a DL and Birth Certificate if you are traveling more than 80 miles into Mexico. Mexico also requires a visa if going more than 80 miles into the counrty.

I flew scallops out of Mexico twice a week in the 80s and didn't even carry a birth certificate, only my Mexican cargo permit, customs license, and pilot/aircraft papers.

Even in 1958 when I went racing in Mexico you didn't need anything but a birth certificate and DL for Mexico.

I don't know you so I surely won't recognize you when cross the border back into the US. Why should I take your word for it that you're a US citizen?

If you can afford a bottle of tequila year, you can afford a passport.

Sorry, I missed the inclusion of Panama and Bermuda. Noting that this is a Liberal AP article, its possible this is a deliberate attempt to mislead us.

Live and learn! All I remember is having to scramble at the last minute to get the darn thing. It was the vacation from hell, too. (4 wimmen should never do this alone) Oh well... I never wanted to go back so I tossed it in the trash when I came home. LOL
