A quarter-century ago, author Bat Ye'or set out to debunk the myth that Jews and other non-Muslim minorities enjoyed a golden age of freedom while living in countries under the sway of Islam.

Her ground-breaking book, Dhimmi: Jews and Christians Under Islam, shined a spotlight on the plight of those who found themselves under Muslim rule. But after several other works that also focused on the concept of the dhimmi — the word used by Muslims to describe those who lived as their legal inferiors — the author has expanded her focus.

For Ye'or (a pen name), the question is no longer one of correcting the historical record about supposed golden ages of interfaith relations. Writing at a time of resurgent Islamic fundamentalism that embraces the concept of jihad, she sees the dhimmis as no longer just the marginalized non-Muslims living in Arab countries. Her main concern today is how contemporary Europe is itself being transformed into a dhimmi nation.

The future of ‘Old Europe’

The result of her work on this question is a new book, Eurabia: The Euro-Arab Axis, and those who wonder about the future of what Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld is fond of calling "old Europe" would do well to consult this dense, scholarly work.

I am always amazed at the human capacity to justify ones self by selective remembering, inflating certain aspects and neglecting other aspects entirely in a given situation.

As the article points out, Jews and Christians living in Muslim society were 'social inferiors'. Muslim women today still fall into that category. Ask the average husband in the Middle East if his wife has it good, he will extoll how great of a husband/provider he is, and how lucky she is to have him looking out for her. Just don't ask him to let her drive, vote, own anything etc..

As I understand it, Muslim women are allowed to drive in every country except Saudi Arabia.

Neither men nor women have effective votes in any ME country except Iraq and Israel. (You might be able to add Palestine to the list.)

Islamic law provides very strong protection for women's property rights. They may not always be enforced, but the law does recognize them, although they generally must manage the property through a male delegate.

Interesting. One of the motives for Old Europe to behave like this is pique and anger and envy for America. Yet how will committing cultural suicide help them show their superiority to Americans?

They are like a childish little boy who in a fit of anger deliberately hurts himself in order to get sympathy from someone he hates. That only makes things worse.

Incidentally, "birth rates have declined precipitately" should be "precipitously." "precipitately" means to be hurled down from a height or to fall like rain or snow.

The keywords here being "allowed", and "male delegate". At the core of these words is the idea that women have no inherent rights of their own, and that any rights they have must be granted to them by someone (A male delegate) or something else (Islamic Law). As I said, it is amazing how humans will shade/cover-up/tap-dance around things in order to justify themselves.

I can think of one other time when an organized, violent, racist minority forced its way into a power it had not earned. The Europeans are insistent that they, and not we, learned lessons from World War Two, but did they really?

Muslims use all kinds of perfidious means to force conversions or make the lives of religious minorities miserable in countries where they are dominant. Christians, Jews, and other religious minorities are subject to pogroms in which gangs of Muslims will enter their homes and carry off their goods while the Muslim police look on and frequently even participate in the looting. Christian girls are raped by Muslim men and have no legal recourse. Christians are frequently forced to work for Muslims at little or no pay because Muslim employers hold threats of false accusations over them, false accusations they know the corrupt Muslim courts will uphold. If a Christian, Jew, or other religious minority should find himself arrested and jailed, threats of gang rape by Muslim prisoners will usually bring about a forced conversion, a conversion he can only later renounce by imperiling his own life, since apostasy carries a death sentence in many Muslim lands. Such a one cannot return to his own Christian family and will have no Muslim family to turn to. He will live the rest of his life in a kind of destitute limbo of begging alms. There are thousands of such individuals in the Muslim countries. Furthermore, incidents outlined above take place every day in Muslim lands where religious minorities are present.
Ask the Christians of Aceh province in Indonesia how benevolent life is for them. Inquire about the benevolent existence of Pakistani Roman Catholics. In Nigeria, the Sudan, Egypt, and elsewhere in the Islamic world religious minorities are seeing their churches burn, their cemeteries desecrated, and their businesses looted by gangs of Muslims. Muslims justify all of these atrocities since non-Muslims have strictly limited rights under Sharia. Also, the burning and looting of a non-Muslim house of worship or business may be a form of jihad. Islam is nothing more nor less than a form of religious, social, and political tyranny both now and since its inception.

These two sentences are mutually contradictory. If the Islamic laws pertaining to women's property rights "may not always be enforced" then those laws by definition do not provide "very strong protection for women's property rights." Similarly if a male delegate must be used to manage a woman's property and she herself cannot do it, then again the law does not protect her right to handle her own affairs by herself.
