Tanzania reports surge in elephant, lion populations
Fri Apr 1,10:34 AM ET
DAR ES SALAAM (AFP) - Tanzania said it had recorded a surge in the population of wildlife living in its national parks and game reserves, notably among elephants and lions, attributable to anti-poaching measures.
Over the past 12 years, Tanzania's the number of elephants in Tanzania has shot up by more than 100 percent from 55,000 to 120,000, Tourism and Natural Resources Minister Zakia Meghji told AFP.
She could not provide exact figures for the increase in lions, but industry sources said Tanzania's Serengeti National Park was now home to about 3,000 lions alone, up substantially from the number recorded in the early 1990s.
Meghji said the population jumps were due to the success of anti-poaching operations and programs under which portions of proceeds from tourism and hunting fund community education, health and water projects.
"Communities living closer to national parks and game sanctuaries are now happy and against poachers," she said.
She also commended wildlife authorities for acting swiftly whenever there was an outbreak of disease.
Thank God. I do not want my children to inherit a world where animals can only be found in zoos. Poachers are vile creatures, and will stop at nothing, including murder, to make a buck.
I know why the Lion population is rising. When I went there, there was this male who was going around his pride proving his maleness. There were five females, and he went around to each one in turn. When he finished with the fifth, he would go back to the first. All this with a lot of roars. The guide told me he could carry on like that for four to five days, without eating or drinking.
No wonder he is the king of the jungle.

Wow. It must be cool to go on a safari. I would like to do that sometime. The lion photo above shows he has a broken front lower tooth. I wonder if he got it from a scrap or from a hunt?

There you go - Good idea!
That is terrifc news. As a Leo, I am very pleased. :)
The word "Tanzania" always makes me chuckle. One of our blonde, airhead local TV Anchors looked totally perplexed when she came across this word in a story once and pronouced it "Tan-ZAY-Nee-Uh" so all we have to do is say the word to one another to crack up. Usually it's used in, "That's it! I've had it with you! I'm packing my bags and moving to 'Tan-ZAY-Nee-Uh!'"
(It should be pronounced "Tan-Zuh-NEE-Uh." Guess you have to be a geek like us to appreciate it, LOL!)
No lyin' about it, Tanzanians take pride in this acheivement.

I sent you one on another subject. :-)
The males don't hunt.
Go and tell him that to his face. I dare ya!
I agree .. but we need to control their populations - because if we don't we will have them encroaching on our communities.
Here in San Diego county - the envirowhackos have kept Coyotes from being killed. Now .. the Coyotes are starting to encroach upon our communities - eating dogs and cats whose owners left them outside (unaware of the danger) - as well as several small children who were playing innocently in their own backyards.

notice the panda is urinating while standing on it's head!!! "Some Pandas do handstands to mark their territory. The aim is to piss as high up a tree as possible. The higher the scent, the 'more dominant' the signal."
