Jetliner's Engine Catches Fire in Denver
AP ^ | April 2, 2005

DENVER -- The engine of a jetliner caught fire Friday evening as pilots revved up the aircraft for takeoff, forcing the crew to abort the flight and evacuate 131 passengers using an emergency inflatable slide.

The fire happened after the United Airlines jet had left the terminal at Denver International Airport bound for New York.

The crew of another plane reported flames spewing out of engine during takeoff, United spokeswoman Jenna Obluck said.

Pilots used an onboard fire-extinguishing system to put out the blaze.

Several passengers suffered minor injuries such as sprained ankles as they went down the slide, airport spokesman Dan Melfi said.

Not so unusual for an engine to catch fire like that.

The ones who sprain their ankles on the slide are often women who don't take off their heels

Just curious as to how many people define "several" in this account.

Aircraft mechanic here for NWA, don't belittle the "slide". The movies rarely show the true effects of "sliding".

It's not like there is some autonomanistic efficiency of flight attendants at the bottom end of the slide.

People are vacating as fast as they can.

Ergo, injuries.

I would sooner buy a new pair of shoes than suffer a sprained ankle. More importantly though, a person could get off more quickly without the high heels.

Apparently it was an airbus.

I think women have to take off their heels before they gone down the slide. Until a recent change, all women had to remove their shoes, because the assumption was that they would be wearing heels and might injure the other passengers at the bottom of the slide if they slammed into them with their heels on.

However, if you remove your shoes, you land heels-first in your bare feet, resulting not only in sprained ankles but in broken heels and ankles. IIRC, the airlines revised the policy after it turned out that most of the injuries on slides were to women who were not wearing shoes because they had been forced to remove them.

Now only women wearing high heels have to remove them, while women wearing sneakers or flats can keep them on. Hint: make sure you're wearing a soft, comfortable low-heeled shoe when you fly. Actually, there's a lot of good reasons to do that!

Yeah, but where's the fun in that? 8^)

I check before flying to make sure I'm not going to be on an Airbus.

It's that composite rudder falling off thing...

There was a 717 engine that went booom a few weeks back in Australia.

These things happen. (except on a 717 or MD80, you better hope you are sitting in the front!)

...which is odd, since the jetliner was all the way over in Dallas.

If it was a British Airway plane they would have kept going.

Well, you can add, that "engine fire" thing to the "composite rudder falling off thing"!

I like the part about the pilots revving the engines for take-off. Just like in a drag race, you repeatedly advance the throttle. It also helps initimidate the other pilots who are flying less powerful aircraft.

Reminds me of the old joke.... About the Cherokee pilot holding short while a DC10 pilot said something about the cute little airplane holding while he landed... and the Cherokee Pilot said, "couple more landings like that and I'll have enough parts for another one of these!"

The A320's engines aren't built by Airbus but by either International Aero Engines or CFM International.

United uses the IAE engine.

So, what about a man who is on a weekend getaway, and he's wearing high heels??!! What are we supposed to do??!! What are the rules for us??!!
