VATICAN CITY, April 1 (Reuters) - Ailing Pope John Paul approved a flurry of Church appointments around the world on Friday in another possible indication he was approaching the end of his life.
A Vatican statement said the Pope had appointed 17 new bishops and archbishops and accepted the resignation of six others.
The nominations and resignations included bishops in Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe, republics of the former Soviet Union and the Pacific.
The large number of appointments and resignations, unusual for one day, was an indication that the Pope, who appeared close to death on Friday, wanted to clear up unfinished business.

Not an official statement yetThe method of announcing the departure of a pope is an elaborate ceremony with several steps before the public announcement is made.

Right. The beautiful ceremony has started. The choir is singing. How do they do that...I would not be able to sing. what an honor they have, what an honor they are doing to Our Holy Father. It is 7:09 pm Rome, the cathedrial is filled. People gathered all over outside, singing, praying. God is there, omnipresent in this holiest of moments.

News says that before it's announced to the public, they have to smash his papal ring to indicate the end of his papacy. Certain ceremonies have to be performed...so there will be a delay in the announcement.

Crying here, too. I made my 4 and 6 year-old stop and say a prayer with me. They think I'm crazy! It's sad for me to see that they don't understand what is happening.
I love this man. He's been so fantastic. I'm afraid of what is to come. I can't help it.

He is one of the few truely great men of my lifetime. He did so much for so many. He changed the world.
It's so sad to see him go.
