VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope John Paul's condition was "very grave" on Friday, the Vatican said in a statement, adding that the Pontiff had suffered shock and cardio-circulatory collapse.
Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said the Pope had been given the Holy Viaticum -- communion reserved for those close to death -- and had decided himself not to go to hospital for treatment.
The statement said the Pope had received cardio-respiratory assistance on Thursday and on Friday morning was still "conscious, lucid and tranquil."

Heart attack or congestive heart failure? Reuters and AP are saying the Pope has suffered a cardio-vascular collapse (via MSNBC). I didn't get the name of the Vatican spokesman.
Poor guy, he's been hanging in for awhile and has held on pretty good. God watch over him.
While we are on the subject, something I was interested in; is the Pope, Pope-for-life or is he able to step down in failing health conditions?

"Very grave" is how they referred to Diana after she'd already died, but they hadn't yet reached all relevant kin.
I have no idea, of his condition... Can just hope and send prayers for his well being and recovery.
