Poor kid, he must be heart broken. If it's 110 years old, what are the chances of it just spontaneously exploding?

You beat me to it.
'cept I said, "Oh, for Gosh sake."
And then, "I hope they don't haul the kid off or charge his parents.."
Never know....States being as stupid and as evil as they have been, escpecially lately.

Oh, for Pete's sakeActually, Civil War era artillery shells are more dangerous than modern ones. The explosives used before WWI are quite unstable and get worse as time goes by. This shell may have been rendered inert but there was no way for the teacher to know that. If my kid were in the class, I would want it evacuated.

what are the chances of it just spontaneously exploding?Let's call in the expert... he probably worked on these when they were new. :)

You know, if he's like most kids when I was young (stone age), he may even have tapped it a few times!
Ah. Youth.
To: Willie Green
It was probably just an empty shell, not even a live one.

110 years old? It may be worth some money.
To: Willie Green
That does it! Junior will NOT be taking my hand grenade collection for show-and-tell.

OK, Civil War era shells can be dangerous, in theory. In practice, when was the last time you heard of one actually exploding?

If it's 110 years old, what are the chances of it just spontaneously exploding? Real good, actually. The older it is, the more likely it has become unstable.
This is one time when the ninnies were right, but when you panic at everything you are certain to be right when you need to be. You just can't get anyone to believe you when you are right.

Let's call in the expert... he probably worked on these when they were new. :) Ha Ha Ha! That's terrible! :'D

If it's WWI or earlier, it could be darned unstable.
The French still occasionally lose a farmer who accidentally plows up a live shell. The French government actually has a group of engineers who go around trying to find and dispose of old munitions before they kill somebody. Scary stuff.

Did he actually point the bullet at anybody?

I remember an old, old, old Bugs Bunny cartoon, where he got drafted and sent to Army boot camp... At the end of the cartoon, he ends up getting a job 'testing' ordinance by pounding on artillery shells with a hammer.

Ah, I didn't realize that. I guess it was a good thing, then. That poor kid probably hates himself, though.
