College classes taught mostly by liberals, study confirms March 30, 2005 UPDA0330 • Latest: College faculties, long assumed to be a liberal bastion, lean further to the left than even the most conspiratorial conservatives might have imagined, a new study says. • Within those ivy-covered halls: By their own description, 72 percent of those teaching at American universities and colleges are liberal and 15 percent are conservative, says the study being published this week. The imbalance is almost as striking in partisan terms: 50 percent of the faculty members surveyed identified themselves as Democrats and 11 percent as Republicans. The disparity is even more pronounced at the most elite schools, where, according to the study, 87 percent of faculty members are liberal and 13 percent are conservative. • Missing: Conservatives, religion and women: "What's most striking is how few conservatives there are in any field," said Robert Lichter, a professor at George Mason University and a co-author of the study. "There was no field we studied in which there were more conservatives than liberals or more Republicans than Democrats. It's a very homogeneous environment, not just in the places you'd expect to be dominated by liberals." Religious services take a back seat for many faculty members, with 51 percent saying they rarely or never attend church or synagogue and 31 percent calling themselves regular churchgoers. On the gender front, 72 percent of the full-time faculty members are male and 28 percent female. • About the study: The findings are based on a survey of 1,643 full-time faculty members at 183 four-year schools. The researchers used 1999 data from the North American Academic Study Survey, the most recent comprehensive data available. The study was funded by the Randolph Foundation, a right-leaning group.

hmm there is a correlation between people being professors and being liberal. Since Professors are in a profession that demands a high level of intelligence, is it possible that this simply means that most smart people agree with liberal philosophies

the correlation is: Conservative/Republicans need not bother to apply.

What part of that equation have you not seen in the past 30 years?

Same ratio in MSM - etc etc

If you think this all came about because of a concentration of "intelligence" - you may either have a deficiency of active gray matter or think we do?

You are exactly right. My daughter attended an elite east coast womyn's college, where you can get a degree in lesbian studies and similar crap. She did not deviate from her upbringing. As we like to say in the South "She was Raised Right."

So, when his conservative, logical and rational wife explains all sides of the issues to him, he is able to see clearly.

And the couch is too uncomfortable to get a good night's sleep on.

It was hard work, but we made sure that we lived our values and made sure they understood our values.

We always respected others but made them aware that there WAS a right and wrong.

Both were in the sciences but still had to endure the occasional 'liberal' classes.

One of my happier days last year was when I ran into my main professor from graduate school at one of Hannity's get out the vote rallies.

I had no idea what his politics were from his classes.

Not in this case. He's too independent a thinker. He doesn't agree with me on everything. I guess it's the honesty thing about him that was primarily responsible for my falling in love with him in the first place!

Well, there ARE days I wish he would heed what I say more:)! But he has the ability to laugh at me and tell me to go fly a kite when he wants to. And he wants to at times! But I do think it's good for honest thinkers to talk to those who disagree with them. And I have to give him credit for that.
